The Republic of Moldova is facing a severe labor shortage, and the solution could lie in importing workers from other countries. This was stated by the Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization, Eugeniu Osmochescu, during the program "Punctul pe AZi" broadcast on May 4th on TVR Moldova. According to the official, a study conducted by the ministry shows that the national economy is below the minimum productivity level of the European Union, and that approximately 300,000 employees would be needed to close this gap. "To reach the minimum productivity level of the European Union, we need 300,000 people," the minister said.

Moldova has 3 million inhabitants.

(…) We have to do it because we have to think of the economy as a vehicle. The vehicle cannot start if it doesn’t have fuel, (…) and workers are that fuel,” the official explained. At the same time, he assured that this process would be strictly regulated and would not endanger state security. “Security is our top priority, because it concerns the safety of our citizens. We view the importation of labor from the perspective of the need to protect our society, our state, and our citizens,” said Mr. Osmochescu.
