I sat on the floor, headphones in, and volume way up. I had never heard anything like it in my life. I didn't even know music COULD sound like that! It was captivating, frightening, and so utterly electric. I hardly even listened to music before this. Whatever I listened to was just the stuff that was playing on the radio. To say that Ozzy's music changed me is a massive understatement- it rewired my brain entirely. I was OBSESSED. I HAD to hear more. The only thing teenage me wanted from then on was the albums, the posters. Dressed head to toe in black- I even started wearing cross necklaces because of them. 'Paranoid' was the first album I ever owned, having been given it by a family member. 'Bark at The Moon' was the first album I bought with my own money. I went from hardly caring about music at all, to a full fledged rocker almost overnight. I completely surrounded myself in not only Sabbath and Ozzy's music and imagery, but their story. I used to stay up all hours of the night with the albums on repeat reading about Ozzy, and the all the musicians he worked with, and I delved into the history of rock music itself. This lead me to discover many other bands and genres, and my passion for music just deepened from there. I never felt that I'd be able to sing, but I remember quite bashfully asking my dad to teach me guitar, because I wanted to play like Iommi. The following year, I was out shopping with my mom, and we were talking about music. I told her, "Listen. I know we can't travel far or do anything crazy. But if Ozzy ever comes to our state, YOU HAVE TO TAKE ME." She laughed, "Yeah, alright, we'll see." and drove us home. The very moment we got home, I went online, and saw it. Tour dates announced. Not only our state, but also NEARBY. It felt like fate to me. "Hey mom? You said you'd take me to see Ozzy if he came to our state? Please take a look at this." I'd said (whilst probably visibly shaking.) Yeah, that was the very best gift my mom ever got for me. Seeing Ozzy live was beyond surreal, and it truly was one of the best days of my entire life. I could probably write a whole essay on that night alone. It was the only time I got to see him, and I'll never forget it. It was a perfect show, beginning to end, with a bright full moon in the sky right above the stage. "EVERYBODY HOWL!" Just like Ozzy gave me a passion for music, seeing him live also made me realize how much I love live shows. Going to concerts and playing my instruments are still some of my biggest passions today. Back then, I was a broken and lost teenager in a lot of ways, and Ozzy and Sabbath gave me so much direction, purpose, confidence, and identity. They were the soundtrack to my formative years, and were a home when I didn't have other places to turn to. Ozzy taught me how important it was to just be myself, to always find joy even in darkness, and to truly live life to the fullest. So many of my very best memories are tied to Ozzy, and I'll be grateful for it as long as I live. Thanks for it all Ozzy! Me and all your other fans are still rocking your music and missing you very much!
