I already learned the real truth behind the word and the history of this person.

But that doesn't mean I would be offended or uncomfortable over the other term. I'm still okay with hearing the other term. It doesn't bother me at all.

I also respect y'all no matter if you're uncomfortable with the term or not. If the old term bothers you, please don't attack anyone for using it, as long as so-called Abelists don't condone it.

Why would you even ask this? Do I give off a vibe that I think gatekeeping is cool? Surprise! Gatekeeping like this is garbage. It sounds like something a TERF would ask, and I'm absolutely NOT down with TERF lines of thought.

Some people identify their sexuality right away and never question it later. Other people may more need more time, life experience, and/or opportunity to feel comfortable with knowing who they are. And lots of people find that how they identify changes over time as they age.

People should feel free to learn who they are in whatever way works for them*, without later friends or romantic partners judging and discarding them.

Toss outdated terms and ideologies in the trash where they belong. Embrace inclusivity.

*obviously assuming they aren't harming someone else in the process

in regard to benedict cumberbatch i'm personally not offended. i see him as the type of man who 100 years ago while possibly still using words like nigger would have wanted them freed. not all white people or non black people are going to welcome you into their arms and homes but as long as they believe in equality and respect (at least in public) then my priorities remain straight and i will not fuss over it.

Can I just say a thing?

It's 2014, can we all agree that it's not okay to use the term "colored" when describing a person of color? Because I just saw someone use that term on tumblr, and the only reason I didn't say anything is because OP I didn't want to clog up the Op's notes, because I actually agree with her original statement somewhat. The people who reblogged it from her are way too happy in their ignorance, though.
