“There’s No Place Like Mars” - from the November issue of #smithsonian When Cassandra Klos was growing up in rural New Hampshire, it was easy to see the stars. She traced the constellations with her finger and imagined how it would feel to travel among them. As a college art student, she launched a photo project about Betty and Barney Hill, a NH couple who claimed to have been abducted by aliens. Then, Klos went on her first mission to Mars. 1) On the HI-SEAS habitat at the top of Mauna Loa, on the Big Island, crew members are caught outside in charging weather, a stand-in for a Martian dust storm. Ah, Yes.... Jupiter.... While climate changes attendant on variations on Earth’s orbit and axial wiggling are increasingly popular as extinction enablers, meteorite impacts are still widely thought to be the probable cause of massive die-offs. (And maybe both views are correct.) The Cretaceous/Tertiary event of 65 million years ago (aka the Yucatán meteor strike) is likely to have been the culprit in the dinosaurs’ disappearance, and a strike near Australia may have extirpated 90% of all species 250 million years ago. Were it not for Jupiter, Earth would be much more frequently meteor-struck: Jupiter, the solar system’s largest planet, may take ten thousand hits for every one that reaches us. Ok a bit late on the post on this one and one of my followers beat me to posting but, saying that I was in a rush to get to work and it completely slipped me to share this awesome bit of astronomy and celestial wonder..... The cresent Moon had too companions either side of it this morning 31/1/2019, now at first thought you would think they are stars but most of us know that there's no stars close to the moon so obviously they had to be something else, (and no not UFO or aliens ) but here's the wonder and awesomeness bit as you view the pic, them two " stars " are actually the planets in our Solar System, Venus on the left and Jupiter on the right ( Moon in middle ). To think how far away they are compared to both Earth and Moon and shine so brightly from the Sun reflecting off them that is amazing!
