They're swapping a single hair tie/ribbon back and forth at the end and beginning of each day, without comment, like an inside joke.

The many, many layers of Tarvek frantically trying to hide how dangerous he really is from his own family.

All their lives, in the power of forces so much bigger than they were, having to be people they're not, not really, because that was the only way to survive.
