Remember when Sasuke meet the reanimated hokages and asked questions right?
Now Hashirama (first hokage) tells his part of the story of the life he had with madara, how the senju and uchiha clan were at each other's throats, and all ends with him having to kill his best friend lover, madara. Hashirama obviously still cares for madara and the uchiha clan, hence he also stopped his brother from going at sasuke.
With sasuke seeing how their relationship turned out, he probably questioned his own relationship with naruto (who's also like hashirama and distant relative to the senju clan) and NOW when both their arms blown off, naruto just says how he's just his "friend" and can't explain nor understand it. I think unable to express that he's in love bc how would he know what romantic love is when there's no parental figure to teach him.
Then there's sasuke who's ready to accept death because that's always been the uchiha's fate. To either live suffering or die and offer up their eyes to the next potential candidate. It sorta mirrors hashirama and madara's fate except naruto's did what hashirama probably wished he'd done. That would be to push harder to not give up and naruto thought that them fighting again would "snap" out of sasuke sulking. All it leads is sasuke shedding a tear.
Idk where I was going with this but I just thought about it now that I'm rewatching some episodes from shippuden.
