Hi, I'm a 2nd year optometry student and I see your posts in the optometry tag sometimes. I was wondering, what's your opinion on Optos as a substitute for dilation? My professors make a big deal about how you always should dilate and I agree with them, but two practices I've worked at only dilated if they couldn't get a good Optos picture (on normal patients, not people with known pathology). Just curious. :-)
I’m so glad you asked! In short, I *LOVE* our optos. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. Patients *detest* being dilated, and you have to admit it does suck. So like you are saying…for just screening normal/healthy patients I pretty much never dilate those anymore. I’m dilating when I’m suspecting pathology b/c of the symptoms or signs. Otherwise they’re getting an Optomap. They love it and I love it. Optometry school profs don’t practice in the real world haha!
How about this: I doubt I will ever practice anywhere that doesn’t have one again. I’m spoiled and I’m not going back!
