La Grande Guerra, giorno dopo giorno: 10 Aprile 1918 Continua l'avanzata tedesca nelle Fiandre, il villaggio di Messines è catturato dai tedeschi ma ripreso durante un contrattacco da parte di truppe sudafricane. La 25a Divisione a Sud, circondata ai fianchi, è costretta a ritirarsi. A causa dell'avanzata tedesca nella campagna a nord, le posizioni della 34a Divisdione ad Armentières devono essere abbandonate. Armentières è persa. A causa del bombardamento con gas da parte tedesca del giorno prima, 8.424 soldati alleati rimangono feriti, i morti però saranno solo 30. The Great War, day by day: 10 April 1918 The German continue their advance in Flanders, the village of Messines is conquered but recaptured in a heroic action by South African troops. The 25th Division to the south, flanked on both sides, withdraws about 4 kilometres (2.5 miles). The advances in the north of the campaign area make the 34th Division's position at Armentiers impossible to hold and they have to pull back. Armentiers is lost. 8,424 the wounded caused by the German bombing of the day before, the dead will be only 30. La Grande Guerra giorno dopo giorno, 9 Aprile 1918: Operazione Georgette. Dopo aver cercato di sfondare la linea alleata a sud di Arras tra la fine di Marzo e l'inizio di Aprile, dopo una breve pausa, i tedeschi ritornano all'attacco, questa volta a Nord, colpendo tra Ypres e Lille, obiettivo i porti della Manica, luoghi chiave per lo sforzo bellico britannico e per la sopravvivenza stessa del BEF, il Corpo di Spedizione Britannico. Il bombardamento, che prevede ampio uso di proietti a gas, inizia alle 4:15, quattro ore e mezzo dopo la fanteria attacca, colpendo in maniera feroce le posizioni dove è attestato il Corpo di Spedizione Portoghese che viene quasi totalmente distrutto. Alle 16:00 i tedeschi hanno raggiunto il fiume Lys, attraversandolo a Sailly e catturando 6000 prigionieri. A fine giornata, i tedeschi sono avanzati su un fronte profondo 9 chilometri e ampio 16. After trying to break through the Allied lines south of Arras at the end of March, after a short break, the Germans return to the attack, this time to the North, striking between Ypres and Lille. This time the objectives are the ports of the English Channel, key locations for the British war effort and for the very survival of the BEF, the British Expeditionary Force. The bombardment, which involves an extensive use of gas shells, begins at 4:15 a.m., four and a half hours later the infantry begins to move, striking fiercely at the positions held by the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps, which suffers heavy losses being almost totally wiped out. At 4:00 pm, the Germans are on the River Lys, crossing it at Sailly. During the action, they capture 6000 prisoners. At the end of the day, the Germans advance into British positions is ten miles (16km) wide and five miles (9km) deep. Battle of Hazebrouck aka Battle of the Lys aka Operation Georgette was the final phase of the Kaiser’s Spring Offensive of 1918.  Soon, calls will build for the Kaiser to abdicate, ending in Ludendorff and Hindenburg adding their voices. Without the power of the Army, the Kaiser had no choice but to abdicate.
