© IWM (Q 6514) Battle of Hazebrouck. Men of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment extinguishing a fire in the township of Robecq, caused by a German shell, 12 April 1918. Battle of Hazebrouck aka Battle of the Lys aka Operation Georgette was the final phase of the Kaiser’s Spring Offensive of 1918.  Soon, calls will build for the Kaiser to abdicate, ending in Ludendorff and Hindenburg adding their voices. Without the power of the Army, the Kaiser had no choice but to abdicate.

One gentleman is shaving while the other mans the gun.  There are lewis gun cartridge cases in the boxes stacked in the foreground. The fluid situation caused by German advances is evidenced by the men not being dug in.  To show how far they’ve retreated; Robecq is SW of Ypres where the British were fighting in 1916.
