The thing about Tosca that gets me is that the guy playing Carvaradossi Knows hes likely still going to die by firing squad. Like he knows it's unlikely they'll actually let him go, especially when Scarpia took the time to torture him and force Tosca to listen to his screams of pain to give up Angelotti. He knows.
But Tosca has just gotten done killing Scarpia. Shes still shaken by the blood she had on her hands. She slit his throat and told Scarpia to suffer, choke on his blood and die as Scarpia writhed on the floor begging for help- Tosca, the gentle lady raised by nuns, the opera singer, the teacher of children. So she truly believes theyve won and that it'll be blanks fired, a false execution with a carriage waiting for them.
So Carvaradossi pretends he believes it. He uses the precious last moments he has with the love of his life to hold and kiss her and tell her how madly and deeply in love with her he is, and puts on bravado when its time. Because the last sight he sees before the hood is put over his head is going to be Tosca's secret smile from the shadows.
(And the machine precision of the soldiers marching agonizingly slow on the stage. The stillness of the music. The deliberate synchronized raising and loading of each rifle. The fact that after the shots ring out and he falls there is no music- only her soprano voice singing, "Just a moment... Theyre leaving... Theyve gone..." Her smiling and rushing to the fallen body and urging "get up, get up! Theyre gone! Were free!" before she finally sees the blood.)
