Fracture my spine, and swear that you’re mine..!
Slaps my tummy like a seal @bug-enthusiast
When you have to wear gloves for the rest of the day because your metaphrenic selves overlapped just a little too much this morning... hashtag justshapeshifterthings
My experience is that no one is actually saying that it is a romance. Carmilla are fully aware that the Protestant clergyman son writer was writing about how lesbians are corruptive and to be aware of who you put in the house to influence your files maintenance. Hence the rewrites in which they are more of a dark romance and nuanced. Carmilla died at 19 and Laura is 19 and they have a dark and light motif going on with jet black hair versus blonde hair etc along with the Karnstein legacy, so it's also very possible to interpret it as a case of Gothic mirroring. Laura is half English half Styrian, situated in a safe Schloss where she is forbidden from ghost stories and has designated prayer twice a day, sheltered, surrounded by a dark wilderness in which Carmila's vampire world lives and arrives under moonlight, her own dark half. It's possible that here two natures are struggling against and drawn to each other, until one has to be eliminated (in this case the dark by the male protectors and upholders of order). In the end, Laura feels less liberated from the darkness and more empty. And we learn from the preface that she died soon after writing only this.
Fair enough I’ve never actually been in the fandom or heard literary discussion on it, romance was just the impression I got through pop culture
Probably doesn’t help that the cover of the version I got says “the sapphic romance that inspired Dracula”
