• Plot •

Alice, Jekyll's fiancé waits with her father for Dr. Jekyll to arrive; However, she is greeted by Mr. Poole with a letter written by Dr. Jekyll informing her that he cannot make it to the opera, as he is too busy treating charity patients. Dr. Jekyll reveals his new experiment to Dr. Lanyon, and his lawyer Utterson. They show doubt and ridicule Dr. Jekyll over the absurdity of his experiments, but agree to disagree.

Finished treating the ill for the day, he uses the time alone to test his new drug and successfully transforms into Mr. Hyde, who seemingly cannot speak. He writes a letter impersonating Dr. Jekyll, informing the house's servants that he is a good friend of the good doctor, and is to be treated with authority.

Mr. Hyde escapes into the London night, and terrorizes a tavern until he is thrown out, making a name for himself. He finds lodgings for the night, harassing the owner, before collapsing on the bed. The next night as Mr. Hyde, he attacks a young boy on crutches before being pulled off by the towns people, starting his violent streak. He begrudgingly agrees to pay for the boys injuries to avoid further trouble for himself.

Once Mr. Hyde returns home, he transforms back into Dr. Jekyll where the guilt and shame of what he has done as Mr. Hyde comes crashing down onto him. He cries, and begs, and promises he will never be tempted to use the drugs ever again. Dr. Jekyll collapses onto his chair, defeated, and transforms into Mr. Hyde once again, without the use of the drugs.

Now seeing the situation he has put himself in, Dr. Jekyll writes up his will with the help of his lawyer, leaving all his possessions to Mr. Hyde if the time comes. Hope enters Dr. Jekyll's heart again as his love Alice comes to visit, where they share a tender moment, and only a moment, as Mr. Hyde takes over once again. Alice who thinks her love is having a medical episode, goes to find help, and encounters Dr. Lanyon and Lawyer Utterson. They look up in terror to see Mr. Hyde watching them from the study's window, and discuss what they should do. When they look up again, they see Dr. Jekyll in the window, watching them instead.

He pulls away from the window back into the privacy of his study and breaks down hysterically, now realizing he has become a martyr for science, and that his life is going to be over soon.

Time has passed, and Dr. Jekyll, and Alice are at a party. At the doorstep, Dr. Jekyll begins to loose himself to Mr. Hyde, causing him to run away. Thinking he is having another medical episode, Alice goes and finds help, but is distracted by shouts of a dying man, and comes out to see her father has been clobbered to death. Mr. Hyde escapes the scene of the crime behind a tree, where he tasks a young boy to deliver a letter to Dr. Lanyon, requesting his help at midnight.

Dr. Lanyon meets with the despicable Mr. Hyde, bring the requested drugs, and is horrified as he watches Mr. Hyde transform into his friend before his very eyes.

Later, in the middle of London, Dr. Jekyll transforms into Mr. Hyde, where he is chased by a large angry mob. Running for his life, he scrambles back to the lodging he previously inhabited, and desperately begins mixing more drugs. The mob now just outside his door, he quickly reveals himself as Dr. Jekyll, leaving them stunned and shocked to where Mr. Hyde has gone.

He quickly dashes back to his study, where he break down once again and transforms into Mr. Hyde in his panic. Crawling over to the table, he makes more of the transformation drug; However, in such a shaken state, he knocks the last of the drugs off the table. Now completely stuck as Mr. Hyde, he panics more and write a note to his servants to go to the chemist as quick as possible. They hurriedly alert Mr. Utterson, and Dr. Lanyon, who rush to his home, attempting to breakdown the door as Mr. Hyde destroys everything. His use of the drugs catch up to him, and he curls up and passes quickly, just before his friends break down his door.

The men mourn him, and cover his body in the torn curtains of the study. Alice rushes in, and draws back the make-shift shroud, to see Dr. Jekyll laying dead, having returned to himself post-mortem. She weeps her love as the death bell rings.

During the still "Dr. Lanyon and Lawyer Utterson riducule Dr. Jekyll for his unheard of experiments" Howard Crampton's name is written in full; However, William Sorelle's name is shortened to "Wm. Sorrel."

I wish someone would do a score for this movie, it would really add a lot, as this movie seems a bit unloved unfortunately

The kiss between Alice and Henry looks so forced. I wonder if there is a story behind it.
