On this day—November 4th, 1991—loveless, the second studio album by My Bloody Valentine, was released. Genre-defining yet transcendent, loveless was created in an atmosphere of tension, stress, and trying difficulty. The work of it, or so it is said, contributed directly to the bankruptcy of Creation Records. Reaching No. 24 on the UK albums chart, the album was hailed in the press for its sonic innovations, but expectations following the album’s critical success and a somewhat disastrous tour that was reportedly so loud it was described as “criminal,” proved to be too much. The band dispersed, and it would be over 20 years until they released a follow up. Despite all of that, loveless is a legendary, timeless, enormously influential work that stands among the greatest albums of all time.
