A question I received: “Can I stitch like you do after taking your Sashiko Class?”. The answer is “Yes”, with following me saying “as long as you won’t give up”. I will not give up teaching you on my end.  ☆ Can one stitch like us after registering the class? No, I am not a magician.  Can one stitch like us after watching the videos? Well, probably not. I am not that good at teaching yet. Can one stitch like us after following the videos? Probably yes. Some people get the rhythm after a few hours ☆ I am quite confident that, when one keeps practicing, you will be able to stitch like we do. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here teaching after 3 years. Sashiko is very simple (but not shallow). Therefore, it is just a matter of learning the muscle memory. If one has a strong muscle memory now, it may take a bit more time to unlearn & learn new posture, but it is absolutely possible. ☆ It may be like riding a bicycle. Most of us can ride a bicycle if they practice enough. Some get it for the first time. Others may need to fall down many times. Wonderful toddler dress with Sashiko & Caring. It is always a sincere pleasure to receive photos from our Sashiko friends who took our Sashiko Online Class / In-person workshop. Once one learns the core, they will have an ability to apply it to anywhere. What I do is to help them find their own Sashiko.  ☆ Sashiko became a big trend. I am happy that many are enjoying Sashiko. Many advise me it is “the time” to take action. Well. I prefer to know who is enjoying Sashiko personally instead of spreading all the information around. I would like to prioritize “whom” I have been sharing with instead of “how many” I have shared the Sashiko. It is my sincere pleasure to get to know of a Sashiko practitioner, with the skill & wisdom of what the Japanese would have practiced a few hundreds years ago.  ☆ Sashi.Co is just a duo of a mother and her son. @UpcycleStitches is a single member company. It is my pleasure to talk about Sashiko after they learn the “Unshin” - how to move the needle in Sashiko - from me. I teach both in Japanese and English, and interestingly, the changes within them are pretty similar. They will find their own Sashiko, soon or later, and I am just a navigator.  ☆ Techniques and skills are very important in Sashiko. However, mastering techniques & skills themselves will not make Sashiko as “Japanese Sashiko”. I am learning the difference within a word “Judo” - the Japanese martial arts as Budo (武道）and sport/combat. This is why I like a long straight line in Sashiko stitching. This is why I call it running stitches - Sashiko is not about making one perfect stitch. I am in a learning process. In order to explain our “normal” Sashiko in another language, I have to learn why it is normal for us. The learning process includes not only the teaching method, but also a deeper understanding of what I would like to share - Sashiko in the Japanese culture. ☆ I have been having a quite bad headache over this holiday. It is difficult to focus on output in headache. Therefore, the holiday has been a good time to spend some time in inputting. Well… wish I could do more, but both ”Stasis (stillness)” and “Dynamic (movement)” is the part of all kinds, right? - Yes, I was reading about the Yin-Yang philosophy. Umm… I cannot make a new post with captions on the business account (@upcyclestitches). Anyone have the same issue?  ☆ I introduced a concept of “守破離 (Shuhari)” yesterday. In most of Japanese practice, there is a “basic format” so called “型 (Kata)”. Kata can be “form”, “model”, and even “mold”. Shuhari is a concept of breaking the Kata after a certain amount of practice with Kata. As similar to other Japanese practice, our Sashiko has this “Kata” as well - both the physical form as well as the mindset (model of how to think). I am a big believer of “creativity”. However, I hope that “freedom” is based on “something structured” instead of “whatever”. ☆ I teach Sashiko Online (with videos & Live Session) to share this “Kata”. I ask everyone to take this Online Class to learn more about our Sashiko - since the common understanding of “Kata” is fundamental in learning. If you are serious in Sashiko, please consider taking the Online Sashiko Class. You will get a “Kata” that you can use for your entire life. It isn’t difficult, but it isn’t shallow either. I admire the confidence. Celebrating one's own achievement (ability) is very important. However, the Japanese are not good at complimenting themselves. They sometimes are (too) humble (to extend it is “rude”.) It is essential to understand how Japanese culture is different when you enjoy the Sashiko. ☆ Let me share a joke. A stereotypical reply when each American & Japanese is asked with a question if they can speak and/or teach Japanese/English. The question was asked “in English”. ★American: “Oh, I can speak Japanese. I will teach you. Sushi, Tempura, and Ninja!” ★Japanese: “Oh, I am so sorry that I cannot speak English. I would dare not to think about teaching English. I am sorry. (replying this in English).” ☆ I am not talking about which reply is good or bad. I am sharing the difference in “confidence” and “teaching”. It took over 15 years for me to be okay with teaching Sashiko, and I will never say the learning of Sashiko is completed within my teaching. My teaching is merely a start of the Sashiko. Can you imagine how “shallow” it looks to me when someone says “This is all you need!” by reading a book or taking a class…? I know Japanese culture is kind of “messed-up” both in a good and bad way. However… it is indeed “deep”. Therefore, I ask, please “TRY” to learn it when you would like to use the word associated with the culture. All I am asking is “try”.
