Enjoying my last Oliváres Clan Reunion in my aunt’s home at the AFPOVAI (Armed Forces of The Philippines Officer's Village Association Inc.) in Barangay Western Bicutan of Taguig City

In the past, the Oliváres always met on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. However, with the passing of most the Oliváres elders (my father’s siblings and in-laws), the last event I had ever attended with most of the clan present was during the wake of the aunt and journalist Ninez Cacho-Oliváres (1941-2020).

Sadly after that, the Wuhan Virus hit the world, and everything went on lockdown. By the time this happened, I was stuck in Cebú City, and I could not attend any events in Metro Manila after that.

Even during the wake of my father, Danilo Pasimio Oliváres (1942-2024), the clan was not together in one sitting, as some had visited on the different days of the wake, and not all together during the burial.

So I was lucky during my March homecoming to attend this party, with the last of the elders (or “oldies” as we cousins would lovingly joke): my aunt and noted journalist Belinda Oliváres-Cunanan, my godmother and noted interior designer Sonia Santiago-Oliváres, my mom and first director of the PCCA (Presidential Commission for Culture and the Arts, now the NCCA) Neomi Tañedo Oliváres

Why do I consider this as my last reunion? Well there is no cousin who has taken up the mantle to be the padrīno or padīna for the annual Christmas or New Year’s parties. Plus, I now longer return to Metro Manila in December to avoid the insane shopping traffic of Metro Manila.

And having experiencing two transient ischemic attacks (TIA) or mini-strokes and two near cardiac arrests, I remember that it was driving all day during Christmas shopping traffic that caused my father to experience his first stroke. Naaaah, don’t wanna go through that.
