This afternoon I took out a library book of soldier’s songs and slang of the Great War. The stories and songs were accompanied by original cartoons satirising the terrible conditions of troops in the water-filled, rat- infested hell holes that were trenches. Attached I’ve redrawn the original gouache painting by Bruce Bairnsfather in pen and ink. The most difficult part of this drawing was substituting appropriate crosshatching tones for light and dark of the original. Note that I did not try to follow the original slavishly, indeed I added my own elements (barbed wire entanglements) As usual, no pencil construction lines, I just drew, and enjoyed it!
