Into Dawn (EGOBANG)
Read on AO3
âI still canât believe I got so lucky.â Arin spoke softly under the sheath of the night, a slither of moonlight peering through the curtains and casting a glow across their satin bed sheets. Legs intertwined, the two of them stayed close to each other, lingering in the pleasant feeling of shared body heat and comfort. Dan set his eyes upon Arin as he spoke, trying to focus on Arinâs features in the darkness.
âHuh?â Dan mumbled back, his voice worn from strenuous recording sessions earlier that day. âWhat dâyou mean, Ar?â He asked softly, moving his hand over to gently run it through Arinâs hair. Dan never considered himself as anything special - for sure, he had talents, but when it came down to it, he was just a 38-year-old man with a lot of hair. He felt Arin shift in the space next to him.
âSomeone like me, meeting someone like you.â Arin shrugged, taking Danâs hand and holding it with both of his own. Arinâs hands were much warmer than Danâs, so it evened out for both of them. Dan processed what Arin had said.
âYouâre being a little cryptic for, uhhâŠâ Dan let go of Arin and rolled over, fumbling to pick up his phone on the cabinet besides them to check the time. He set it down, turning back. âA little cryptic for 3:42am, baby bear.â He smiled, moving his hands back to hold Arinâs. What could he say? He was cold, and Arin always maintained a consistent warmth.
âI never thought someone like you would fall in love with someone like me.â Arin squeezed Danâs hands. Dan didnât seem to understand, and with the way Arinâs tone became softer, he was growing more confused by the second.
âCall me an idiot, but I have, like-- no idea what youâre trying to say.â Dan huffed a quiet chuckle, trying to study Arinâs face in the dark. He could only vaguely make out the shape of Arin, and he couldnât really see his expression as it was so dark.
Arin was silent. Dan began threading locks of Arinâs hair through his fingers again. He counted a solid two minutes before sitting up and flicking the lamp on next to them. Arin was crying.
âOh-- Arin, are you--?â A silly question. Of course he wasnât okay. âWhatâs wrong, buddy?â Dan asked him, as Arin hid his face under the duvet covers. Dan shook his head, dragging the covers off of Arin again. Arin seemed to cower.
âItâs stupid, donât worryâŠâ Arin rubbed at his eyes, but Dan was still concerned. âItâs really fuckinâ... stupid.â Arin sighed, his breathing staggered. Dan rolled his eyes, deciding to run his fingers through Arinâs hair again to try and soothe him.
âYou know Iâm here for you, big cat.â Dan sighed softly. He hated seeing Arin pent up like this - he especially hated not being able to do anything about it. Arin dragged himself even closer to Dan, burying his face into Danâs chest. Dan obliged, wrapping his arms around Arin to keep him as close as possible. âWhatâs wrong?â He tried again, hoping that since starting a relationship, they could be more open with each other. Arin nuzzled his head into Danâs chest, choosing to remain quiet.
Dan let his mind run rampant with thoughts through the silence. Did Arin not think he was good enoughâŠ? He knew that Arin placed Dan on a pedestal when it came to that kind of thing - theyâd had numerous quarrels over the years, and Arin would lessen his worth almost every time. It was heartbreaking. It was always praise for his band, or praise for his looks⊠and Dan had just throttled him for his annoyance and lack of observation. Back then, Dan didnât have the courage to counteract; either he was too mad at Arin to respond, or he hadnât wanted to come on too strong. A lot had changed since then.
âIâm not good enough for someone like you. Thatâs what Iâm trying to say.â Arin mumbled into Danâs chest, a choked sob following. âYou deserve so much better than a guy who--â
âStop.â Dan begged him to stop. He knew where this was headed, and he already knew everything that Arin thought about himself by now. âThatâs all up here.â He reached up and tapped the top of Arinâs head with a sort of sad smile. Arin pulled away from Danâs chest, looking up at him in shock.
âBut I--â Arin started again. Dan shook his head, interrupting him almost immediately.
âI love you Arin. Like, super.â Dan explained, holding both of Arinâs hands and giving them a firm squeeze. âI love every single little thing about you.â He studied Arinâs face, watching as he now avoided to look at Dan. Dan tilted Arinâs head up, so that they were looking right at each other. Arin gulped. âI love you.â Dan repeated.
âWhy?â Arin was crumbling where they lay. Dan pressed a gentle kiss to Arinâs forehead.
â...Whatâs this all about?â Dan tilted his head. There had to be something more to this. Cautiously, he moved his arms to wrap around Arinâs waist, and Arin visibly flinched. Danâs eyes widened. âOh, Arin--â
âI told you, itâs stupidâŠâ He grumbled, momentarily embodying his signature title of âGrumpâ. Dan shook his head in disbelief.
âArin, thereâs nothing wrong with the way you look.â Dan moved to hug Arinâs waist again, and again, Arin flinched. âCome on, really?â
âYes, there is, Dan!â Arin crossed his arms, finally sitting up properly. âIâve put on too much weight, my hair awkwardly hangs around my shoulders, my beard looks like-- fucking ginger pubes--â
âI, personally, adore those ginger pubes.â Dan spoke up with a smile. âItâs-- the weirdest but most satisfying feeling when we kiss. A bit ticklish, though. But I wouldnât change that feeling for the world.â Dan slowly reached out and scratched Arinâs beard, under his chin. Arin responded by leaning towards the touch, and a sly grin came across Danâs face. âWow. Guess I called you âbig catâ for a reason, hmm?â He laughed, and Arin batted his hand away.
âFuck off, Avidan.â He chuckled, shaking his head and itching his beard. Dan then pressed a gentle kiss to Arinâs lips, and Arin returned the favour. He supposed that if Dan liked it, then the beard could stay. As they both pulled away, Dan was still studying his face intensely; Arin wouldnât be lying if he said he was overwhelmed with the attention.
âAnd your hair⊠God your hairâŠâ Dan placed his hand in Arinâs hair and ran his fingers through the strands. Arin leaned into the touch once again, savouring the moment. âI love how smooth it is. Youâve seen my hair, dude. I love being able to play with it as often and as much as I wantâŠâ Dan grinned, ruffling Arinâs hair. âPlus, it looks really nice when itâs long. So you just have to wait for this âawkward stageâ or whatever you called it to pass. Happens to everyone! Happened to me. Donât you remember?â Dan giggled, and Arin followed suite.
âOf course, man.â Arin agreed. Heâd always wanted his hair longer. And if Dan thought it looked good⊠then it couldnât go wrong. He paused and held his breath - he knew what was coming next. Dan paused as well. It was unspoken between the two of them - Arin had been stressed with work on different projects, and theyâd only recently taken a month off for self-care and such. Even then, Arin had been dissatisfied with the lack of work he had. He was the kind of person who needed to be working constantly in order to feel any kind of satisfaction.
âI love your body.â Dan said softly. âAnd⊠Iâm not just saying that.â He gently carressed Arinâs waist again, ignoring the way that Arin flinched when they made contact. âI love how warm and soft you are, itâs comforting. I love cuddling up to you on nights like theseâŠâ Dan scooched a little closer, a small smile on his face. He lowered his voice, speaking in a whisper. âAnd I love watching your entire body jiggle underneath me when we fuck.â
Arin screeched, pushing Dan away lightly with a bright red face. âLeigh Daniel Avidan, you dirty bastard!â He was laughing, incredibly embarrassed. The two of them, in sync, leaned closer and shared another kiss, Dan snaking his arms around Arinâs waist. Arin tilted his head as they kissed, muffling a quiet moan as Dan gave his sides a squeeze. Dan pulled back and pressed his lips to Arinâs jaw, then slowly moved down to kiss along Arinâs neck. Arin lifted his head, gasping as he felt Dan nibble at the skin there.
âI love you, Arin.â Dan mumbled against his skin. âDonât forget that.â And Arin nodded, grazing his bottom lip with his teeth.
âI love you tooâŠâ He said breathlessly, as Dan pressed his lips against Arinâs neck again to suck at the skin there. He let out a breathless moan, whimpering as Dan left a flushed red mark against his neck. As Dan pulled away, Arin pressed a hand to the side of his neck, sucking in air through his teeth. âLooks like Iâll be wearing a scarf to work tomorrow, huh?â He grinned.
âIs someone embarrassed?â Dan smirked, as he moved to hold Arinâs hands again. He then yawned, feeling the hour of 4am strike him with tiredness. âDude, Iâm fuckinâ exhausted. Can we sleep now?â He asked. Arin nodded, shuffling himself back under the covers and turning away from Dan. Dan raised his eyebrows, flicking the light off. âDid I do something wrong?â He asked gently, worried that he might set Arin off in tears again.
âSpoon me.â Arin mumbled into his pillow. With a soft chuckle, Dan obliged, shuffling down and cosying himself around Arin. He wrapped an arm across Arinâs waist, and he didnât flinch this time.
Here like this, it was perfect. Their legs became intertwined once again, the two of them falling asleep to the sound of each otherâs breathing, as the night faded into dawn.
