How do u calculate amps
I’ve been meaning to do a post on Ohm’s Law, but what better time than now to do so.
Now, bear in mind, there are many different ways to calculate the current, or amps, through a device depending on what you are doing. But all of these methods are based in part on Ohm’s law which relates current, resistance, and voltage. The basic formula states that voltage (V) across a device is equal to the current (I) through the device multiplied by its resistance (Ω, or R).
V = I * R
To solve for current algebraically, simply divide the voltage by the resistance, so you get:
I = V / R
Of course, this requires you to know the voltage across the device and its internal resistance, values very easily measured by a multimeter, but it is simple enough to calculate once you know those two values. The trouble comes when you only know one of the values or you are dealing with magnetism instead of electricity.
I may expand on this later, but for now, that is the basic method of calculating amps through Ohm’s Law.
