Whilst praying along with his Buddhist friends, who were going through their initiation ceremony, he was inundated with Hebrew Christian hospital chemicals. The core meaning is ''adversary,' 'opponent,' or 'one who obstructs.' This is the basic lexical sense and has nothing to do with a horny devil.

Here are the distinct uses:

Human adversary — someone opposing another person (e.g., political or military rival).

Heavenly adversary — an angel acting as an obstacle (Numbers 22:22).

Courtroom accuser — in Job and Zechariah, a member of the divine council who prosecutes or tests humans.

Proper name 'Satan' — only in very late texts (e.g., 1 Chronicles 21:1) does the term behave like a personal name.

The word śāṭān does not originally mean 'the devil.' Its earliest sense is a role, not a character — anyone who opposes, obstructs, or accuses can be a śāṭān.

Demeanour means a person’s outward manner — the way they appear to behave through their posture, tone, facial expression, and general presence. It’s the visible style of conduct someone carries in the world. Not their private thoughts, but the felt impression they exude-a-dude.

How many times have we heard the statement, ‘God knows our hearts’?! What may seem like a noble cause by outward appearances, such as the building of Babel in Genesis 11, may in fact be idolatry if our hearts are not in the right place, or if our intent is not to bring glory to God.

The city of Babel had become a hotbed for idolatry and self-gratification. Against God’s provision, mankind wanted to build a city (and a tower that reached the heavens) for the sole purpose of preventing themselves from separating. Using the uniform language that God had given them, they set about completing this task. When God learned of this, He was displeased and He decided to confuse the builders by giving them different languages so that they could no longer understand one another. In the end, they were unable to complete their task.

Thankfully, God does not deal with us according to our sins, but rather mercifully. He has various and effective ways to stifle and defeat the actions of those who set themselves against His glory. Since God promised not to destroy His beloved (Genesis 9), He dealt directly with the sin itself (idolatry) instead of destroying the sinners. Understand that there is no wisdom or counsel greater than our Lord. By virtue, evil and wickedness has never prevailed nor will it ever succeed against the word of God.

Knowing this, we should find comfort in the midst of our own attacks for God promised ‘no weapon formed against you shall prosper’ (Isaiah 54:17a NIV).
