About Nui
I think Nui might have been a bit scared of loving/getting attached to Tahomaru since she went through the trauma of having her first child ripped away from her.
She went through a painful birth, had her own husband take away her child and order someone to kill the poor baby, and she pushed past her limits to try and run to get her baby back, but was too late. She was devastated and believed that her son whom she loved so dearly was dead and then she didn't even get any real time to mourn before she was forced to get pregnant again.
This is truly traumatic and left her with a deep depression. While Hyakkimaru was made with her love, Tahomaru was forced upon her. Obviously it's not Tahomaru's fault and it was really unfair to him to be left without his mother's love, but it is understandable why Nui had a hard time bonding with him after having gone through what she did.
It does not excuse the neglect of Tahomaru, but it does somewhat explain why she feels distant from him.
