United Conclusions
I received my "thanks, but no thanks" email from United Airlines today. Even though I knew it was coming, it's still absolutely spirit crushing to see the words "we're moving forward with other applicants; feel free to reapply in six months." Since I can no longer pursue this career (for the present), I suppose it doesn't matter.

what I see most as a therapist, is the distress or the guilt that students feel towards the end of graduate school when some students are tacitly chosen as the next generation of scholars, some not. For the preferred student, there is more careful attention to their work and the development of social relationships with the faculty (and the professional connections that come from this). This experience is more complex than simple favoritism. My patients talk about it a lot. They don't talk about it with their cohort or with faculty.
