It's amazing to look back and see how much time has passed since a memory we perceive as recent. As humans, our memories are imperfect, constantly fading around the edges, common sense or imagination swooping in to fill in the blanks. But a handful of memories, for reasons we often do not understand, remain vivid and detailed. I can't believe it's been two years since my last day in New York City. I remember walking down the sidewalks, smelling the cherry blossoms, and taking the tram to Roosevelt Island like it was last week. New York will always be a special city for me. I know it will recuperate quickly once the virus passes. Forgive my absence. I haven't been traveling much, and I've been spending most of my free time on a writing project. But I am still here. Just another Throwback Thursday... ° ° ° When 2020 began, I promised myself that I'd take more chances and see more of the world. I'd push myself out of my very comfortable little shell. ° ° ° Instead, this year has become a homebody introvert's dream. My happy place is exactly where it's safest to be. While others are going stir-crazy, my life hasn't changed at all. I'm content. And I have even more free time to write. ° ° ° I hope the health crisis comes to a speedy end. I'm currently on a 33.5 hour layover in St. Louis, with nowhere to go. Since we're all kind of living through our throwbacks, I thought I'd share one from my last long layover in St. Louis, September 2019. That was a great day. I went to the Botanical Garden (this photo was taken there), the Zoo, Forest Park, a couple museums...all places I cannot go right now. It's difficult to still be traveling (for work) but unable to see anything. I keep reminding myself of this: each time I choose to stay in, I'm helping in some tiny way to heal our sick planet. Each time YOU choose to stay in, you're helping. Each of us is only one person, but when the majority of BILLIONS make a conscious decision to #StayHome, think of how much that is helping our future and the Earth. I am only one: a tiny sapling of a tree in a endless forest. It's always darkest before the dawn. ° ° ° These are trying and uncertain times. Not much can be said that hasn't been said already. But be safe, stay healthy, and for the sake of the whole world, stay away from others as much as you are able. ° ° ° Being a flight attendant has taken on a new meaning for me lately. I have always gone to work knowing "I could die today." (To a certain extent, everyone can say that - accidents happen, people behave in unfathomable ways, and we're all slowly dying in the philosophical, Sylvia Plath kind of way. Morbid, perhaps, but still undeniable.) However, now another threat has presented itself to my daily anxieties. Along with crashes and terrorist attacks, I have to worry about being stuck inside a metal tube of germs with people who may or may not have a deadly virus. Yes, I'm scared. But scared means more situationally aware, and that's the best protection I have while at work. Awareness: my suit of armor. ° ° ° Please be careful. Please be kind. Please stay at home. Even if you feel fine, consider the 80-year-old woman sitting near you. We can and will make it through this, but only if everyone makes an effort. ♀️ INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY ♀️ The first International Women's Day to be celebrated in the US took place in 1909. The day is a global celebration of the social, economic, and political achievements of women. It's a worldwide event in which people come together to champion gender equality, women's rights, and female empowerment. Equal pay, the right to vote, and concerns over poor working conditions have been topics of focus on this day in the past. ° ° ° I know that a great deal of what I take for granted every day is the result of the tireless efforts of the women who came before me. Thanks to their hard work, dedication, resolve, and ambition, I can: vote, take out a loan without a male co-signer, own property, live alone, not feel obligated to sacrifice my happiness for antiquated traditions (such as women only being valuable if they are wives and mothers), and travel the world with money I earned at MY job! None of this would be my reality without the (often literal) blood, sweat, and tears of those who trod this Earth before me. ° ° ° And so... Thank you. Thank you to every woman who ever said, "Good enough isn't good enough." Thank you to every woman who ever stood up against her oppressors - whether with words, deeds, or physically en masse. A photo made to (hopefully) look wistful and romantic with some high-contrast and vignette deserves some type of philosophical contemplation - don't you think? ° ° ° *Laughs* I don't know if I have anything along the "philosophy" lines to share, but I suppose I've learned something interesting in my time as a flight attendant. Well, to say I "learned" might be taking too much credit. It's more accurate to say "it dawned on me." That being: you don't need to travel across the world to see something remarkable. Every place is unique, therefore every place has intrigue. Your morning-trip-to-work may be someone else's extraordinary & unbelievable. I used to think I had to travel to every corner of the Earth to have a gallery worth sharing. But some of the most incredible sights I've ever seen have been a puddle-jumper flight from my home in Orlando. St. Louis, Atlanta, New York, Tampa, Salt Lake City...these locations can be every bit as breathtaking as locations overseas. FLASHBACK FRIDAY 💛💙💜 My first few layovers in Tampa had been early mornings into afternoons. Tampa sunrises are beautiful and serene, and honestly, it's a fantastic city to be in at any time of day. However, I will never forget my first Tampa sunset. I witnessed it just a few days before my birthday, and I was left speechless. I meandered down the Riverwalk in an almost trancelike state, thinking: "How is it possible for the sky to look like THAT?" . . . (In all actuality, beautiful, colorful sunsets are a product of pollution and holes in the Ozone layer, but let's not get into the ugly science of it all right now.) Beauty is all around us, and often comes in subtle, unassuming forms. I had the most wonderful crew on my delayed red-eye turn last night, and I was reminded of this. Something unfortunate can produce something amazing. Under normal circumstances, I don't post many photos of myself (honestly, because I don't like them), but yesterday was a milestone day that should be acknowledged with something special: I had my third annual Recurrent Ground School as a flight attendant...and passed!! That means I get to continue flying professionally for another calendar year!! Recurrent is always a nerve-wracking, high-anxiety day; it's frightening to know that keeping your job depends on passing a series of tests and drills. But our trainers were helpful and encouraging, and my whole group passed without issue. ° ° ° Hopefully this means that more adventures and breathtaking locations (like the ones pictured) are in my future! THROWBACK THURSDAY ♡ ♡ ♡ ° ° ° One of my favorite trips to Philadelphia (mostly because I lucked out and got to stay in a gorgeous hotel right across the street from City Hall, instead of our normal, gross layover hotel). It was a mid-July day, high around 90 degrees, but I explored for about eight hours. ° ° ° Philadelphia has some incredible architecture, and I have a weakness for the historical and modern in the same frame (see photo 4). The "crashed plane" in the first photo is actually a greenhouse situated next to the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art (see photo 2). I was attempting to pose in front of the plane - to show the sheer scale of it - but I only have a ten second timer on my phone!! 😬 So, instead, it kind of looks like I'm cautiously approaching it, the way a person would, if seeing such a sight! I kinda like it! Happy accident. (Also, it's crazy how fast my hair has grown in a year and a half. Life is Comprised of Moments. Stop me if you've heard this one... ° ° ° I know it's the swift, fleeting Moments that really enrich our lives. I remember every beautiful second of my week in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with more clarity and vivid detail than I remember the rest of 2019 combined. When you travel, the Moments come in abundance - almost a sensory overload, but in the very best way. ° ° ° For the first time since entering the workforce, I have a job that doesn't require me to work 5-6 days/45-50 hours a week. Between that and the unbeatable Florida weather, I don't work as much as I should. And while there's little I love more than sitting on my balcony with an iced coffee and a good book, I won't remember those afternoons the way I remember traveling. There is a much-needed place in our lives for downtime, but it shouldn't trump our goals. ° ° ° I was reminded recently of the quote: "Discipline is knowing the difference between what you want NOW, and what you want MOST." I am the queen of what I want now. But it's time to become more disciplined. I love days off, but what I want most is to collect more Moments. Precious Moments.
