Let's talk Poison Ivy! • A plant much maligned. Perhaps with some reason. If you've come into contact with this plant, you know it'll get your attention in a big way soon enough. For many years, I thought I was one of the few not sensitive to its oil. But, many instances later in the last few years, and a full-body contact rash just last year, I can now usually spot this plant with eagle-like precision. •• But just as nothing is all good or all bad (except maybe mosquitoes), poison ivy has some truly beneficial qualities. In fact, it's really only harmful to humans. Other animals are not sensitive to its oil, and many use it for food (especially the berries). The Native Americans believed the presence of Poison Ivy was a signal that the land in that area was unsuitable for humans and should be avoided. If you consider how spread out we humans have become, leaving less and less of the "wild" areas, perhaps this was wise and insightful. We need some land left untouched by (unconscious) human presence. ••• Poison Ivy spirit medicine says to pay attention and beware. You can't walk around with your head in the clouds, disconnected, unseeing of the world around you. It forces the attention into the present moment. It also stresses good boundaries. Louise Hay says that the rash can indicate a feeling of vulnerability and being prone to attack (uh - yeah! lol 😅) Since our skin is connected to the root chakra energetically, it tends to correlate with our feelings around safety. Again, reasons to stay alert and present in the moment, but not requiring hyper-vigilance. It's not hard to learn where to look for it, when to expect it and the same goes for our lives.
