where can one advance to? like, wht’s the next form of this job, as a pokemon?

I mean if you aspire to it you can become lab supervisor or something like that but lab tech is... a job description. It’s like asking what you can advance to if you’re a welder or a plumber. Like congrats, you’re a welder now. You can quite happily spent your entire life being a welder and never go for any sort of admin position. I know I won’t. I’m doing a lil admin stuff on the side (order supplies, help with QM) and frankly they’d have to pay me a whole lot better than they do to make me put in the hours to fight that much paperwork.

is there no permission to just go there to hang out and listen to the discussion? or you are afraid that even if accepted, that would be too boring?

honestly this is actually my own fault 

if i was less tired and bleah I would’ve done that, but, it was at 6, and I thought I’d have to go back to work and then make it home and unload all the food and stuff before it goes bad; so I got myself into walleyball at 7 which I don’t really want to do

I do give a shit, though, not because I owe anything to a stranger (I don’t) but because it feels like it exposes how little I truly know.

The writer I was talking about almost certainly knows more information relevant to the “civilization question” that I will ever know, period*.  This is disquieting.  I don’t care about the guy but I do care about my own (always precarious!) sense that I know more than nothing about the world I live in.

?? you have linked today to a freddie deboer post, and one of the things he hates in activist culture is the inability to build coalition. Do you propose to care even less about convincing others and building movements? maybe I don't get some irony.

There’s no reason to think because one agrees with one thing deBoer writes, one MUST AGREE WITH ALL THINGS HE HAS SAID EVER (or any other author) . In fact that fallacy of that assumption is one of his main themes. And dear Lord, is there is a lot to object about Freddie. But there’s also a lot of good analysis, and one should without fear refer to the good analysis for the value it is in of itself.

I think you misunderstand both his, and my points about coalitions, since I think we are in agreement on them.

You should absolutely form tactical coalitions on specific issues, as a method of gaining power to achieve your ethical objectives. You should work with social conservatives to support a union. You should work with libertarian techbros to get climate change. You should work with centrist operatives to win national elections. You should work with right wing populists to reign in finance capitalism. For no specific fight should you be too pure, or too elitist, or too vengeful to not form a coalition for this specific goal.

What is misleading is trying to form one, all purpose, overarching Coalition of the Ascendent that make all your allies “comfortable” and “aware” with no specific, concrete objective. And then you limit yourself to only working with those allies on every particular fight, rendering yourself impotent and puritanical. That is not what a Time Traveler would do. and it’s also the exact sort of social-status-oriented activism performance that deBoer is so against as well.

...wouldn't extending networks -> getting laid more -> automatically becoming more relaxed -> this would get better too? I don't see why to frame seducing strangers as the valuable metric and the other method as unimportant/cheating

yeah, you’re right 

like.. seducing strangers IS valuable because I want to be the kind of person who can do that  

but this fixation on making dating sites work, in alaska, is absolutely horrid

it’s obviously hard mode, it’s making me feel AWFUL, it’s a struggle to do, and it’s not building valuable skills it’s just a sink.  

it’s just me trying to prove to myself that I can win.  but that’s a dumb little game which is imprisoning me.  why isn’t it working?

maybe because it’s alaska

maybe because i’m looking for something without lifelong commitment 

maybe because you have to be in the top 10% or 20% of men appearancewise and i’m not, at least in ways I can capture in a profile 

either way it’s not working.  and I can already kick massive ass in person when I feel comfortable and I can make myself more comfortable and if I spend time around more people in real life networks i will make their lives better and they will extend the network for me as I get more comfortable asking them to do that
