Northrop F-89 Scorpion interceptor aircraft in flight during the 1950s.
The aircraft are F-89D models, identifiable by the large wingtip pods designed to hold "Mighty Mouse" unguided rockets instead of traditional guns.
They served with the 59th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron based at Goose Bay Air Base in Labrador, Canada.
The F-89 was the first jet-powered aircraft designed specifically for the interceptor role to enter service with the United States Air Force.
Some models of this aircraft were later upgraded to carry the AIR-2 Genie, an unguided air-to-air nuclear weapon.
