I remember seeing Psychic Princess (Tong Ling Fei) in the season listings when it aired and I wanted to see it because the animation looked a lot to me like Cross Ange, which I really liked (the artwork, that is - the anime was pretty rancid), but I don’t remember it being shown anywhere here in 2018. So, when I saw it come up on Crunchyroll now that the second half has been added, I got to sit down to it after all.Â
And I gotta tell you, this is a total riot. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I am all-in on these characters, especially our Princess Ye. She is independent, headstrong, insolent, ornery to her core, and as if that weren’t enough to make us like her already, they had to go and make her irresistibly cute, even when she’s being an evil little shit. The artwork is fantastic - there are some places where the CGI doesn't transition quite right and it looks a little wonky, but the stylization is still such a welcomed break from the Xeroxed copy look that everything seems to have taken on the last 2yrs or so. I am loving the look almost as much as the non-stop sarcasm and defiant obstinance.Â
All in all, the story isn’t anything that’s going to surprise anyone, and what you expect to happen is pretty much exactly what does happen, but I could not stop watching episodes, is too fun. I like the thrawn attitudes, the irony of the relationships, and the really unique artwork. Not to mention PsyPri is totally freakin’ hilarious and 18 minutes of feelgood to the veins with every episode. It’s been a while since I’ve sat through more than a couple of episodes of anything lately, and in one afternoon I watched every available episode from the very beginning because I didn’t want the vibe to end, even though it seems to right in the middle of the story. Totally worthwhile watch.  Â
