Matt went through some old photos and found our Sadie Hawkins dance photo from like 2001? We wore matching At the Drive In shirts, wide leg jeans, and black skate shoes. I had Rainbow Brite shoelaces in my shoes and I know I had gotten some for Matt but he wasn’t wearing them in the photo. Me, in 2026, looked at the photo and was like “I can’t believe you didn’t wear the Rainbow Brite shoelaces,” and then I flipped over the photo where me, in 2001, wrote, “you should have worn the Rainbow Brite shoelaces.”
Pride Fish!
I did it! And I'm really happy with how this turned out.
Rambouillet fiber from Banshee Fiber Art on Etsy hand spun and chain plied by me on a drop spindle. I've been really happy with everything I've gotten from this shop btw, the braids are always super fluffy and soft no matter the fiber type/breed.
This is only 16 or 17 grams of the total braid, which means I've got plenty left to make a few more. This is the equivalent of sport or dk weight.
I'm really glad my math worked out and I had just the right amount. The lower pectoral fins are made from Malabrigo Arroyo yarn in Cyan and worked out great. I can't wait to spin up the rest and make some more.
Bonus cat!

Matt found a newspaper page from 1983 and a house was $34,000, you could put down $800. The house was 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2500 square feet. The same house now is $301,000.
I mean even if you could afford to pay back student loans, who would want to be paying them now when they will go to funding killing people in Iran or Palestine, or for building a fucking ballroom? It isn’t like paying them back during this administration goes toward someone else’s education, or for healthcare, or for literally anything positive.

We also planted these flowers last fall. They started opening up in the past month or so. My favorite is the one that looks like it has bedhead. It just grew that way and I didn’t think it would turn purple but it did.

Joan Murrell Owens PhD
This is part of a quilt I'm making showcasing some scientific advancements made by African American scientists.
Joan Murrell Owens was a marine biologist that specialized in the study of button corals. While she wanted to study marine science from a young age, the university she attended didn’t have a program in that field, so she went into the field of education. After more than a decade working in that field, she found her male colleagues were being paid more than her, and Owens quit her job to go back to school studying her lifelong passion. Again, her university did not have a dedicated undergraduate program in the marine sciences, so she completed her B.S. in geology with a minor in zoology to gain the necessary knowledge set. She then earned a M.S. and was hired as a geology professor at Howard University. Simultaneously, she worked as a technician at the Smithsonian and conducted research towards her doctorate. Typically, PhD research in marine biology would include scuba diving to collect specimens, but Owens had sickle cell traits which would make diving dangerous. Instead, she conducted studies on a portion of the Smithsonian’s collection, gathered in the 1800s by the USS Albatross, a deep sea research vessel. She received her PhD in 1984 for her dissertation "Microstructural Changes in the Scleractinian Families Micrabaciidae and Fungiidae and their Taxonomic and Ecologic Implications." Owens went on to identify and name a new genus of coral, Rhombopsammia, and discovered and described three species of button corals.
