Dear Internet,

I was hanging out with my daughter’s youngest daughter last night and I happened to see a little blue thing on her mobile phone. I said, “what is that?”, she said, “it’s tumblr. It’s a social media platform. Do you know what that is?” I said yes, of course I do, I’m old, not dumb. She said do you want to try it? I said no, I don’t like uncompromising people who enjoy the sound of their own voices too much to ever listen to anyone else’s. She laughed. You’re not wrong, she conceded, but the internet can be used to do many other things. She then explained that a blog is a bit like an open letter that can be read by many people and get you lots of friends.

I like making friends. And I like writing.

So I said can you make me a blog? She said sure, and got to work.

I must admit I never thought that an internet could take so much effort, but my granddaughter nearly had a meltdown making this blog thing. She said the watered marks were a real pain and used the Lord’s name in vain a few times. I did not like that.

I do not like the internet either. I think it makes people less empathetic. Kids nowadays, they don’t have to look into people’s eyes anymore; back when I was a young lady, we had to face the consequences of hurting someone’s feelings, now you don’t have to anymore. You just delete them from your internet.

But for my granddaughter’s sake, I’m going to try.

She says you can do many things with the internet: you can see what your favourite famous person is doing. She likes Jake Jill and Hall and Keith Reeses. Keen Leaf? Kian Reef. The guy from the Matrix.

I like Julia Roberts. I think she’s a beautiful and talented young lady. She showed me how to see her instant gram. I guess that was fun, though I do not understand why people want everyone to see their food. I make good food, I’m Italian, every Italian makes good food. Does that mean I should put my food on the internet?

Maybe doing the internet is just another skill, just like painting or woodworking and the young people who put up bathing suit self-portraits are just skilled in a different way from what I’m used to. Maybe it’s all pointless. That, I don’t know. All I know is that my granddaughter thinks I have a unique perspective and maybe I can help someone on the tumbler see the world through my eyes.

So here I am, at seventy-four, on the blogs.

I am here to tell stories, that’s what I do best, being a grandma. I will try and explain the news, as well as books, movies, plays and all sorts of art to you. You may have already heard of the things I will tell you about, or they might be entirely new to you, but I still hope that you’ll listen and be patient with me, as I have a lot to learn.

I do not like you, Internet, but who knows, we might become good friends after all.
