People will say that Shane and Ilya’s problem was “miscommunication” and in the same breath criticize Shane for being “selfish” and when you I ask how was he selfish? Well he did not read Ilya’s mind. And I don’t blame them, bc Shane does read Ilya’s mind when it benefits the narrative’s portrayal of Ilya as this martyr who can’t do any wrong. When Ilya is downright cruel to Shane, Shane somehow knows he doesn’t mean it. When his compliments are racially charged, Shane somehow knows that Ilya is not being racist. (And this is since before they become exclusive. Shane has always had the ability to read Ilya’s mind.) So I understand the frustration with him loosing this ability when it comes to Ilya’s struggles. Ilya of course doesn’t have this superpower, he can’t read Shane’s mind, and that’s the narrative’s excuse for him every time he gets sad/mad about something Shane says or does that Ilya takes out of proportion. Which is normal. And should’ve been the case for Shane too.
This is why I’ll never subscribe to the popular headcanon of them having some type of telepathy. These people don’t know each other that well. They’ve never lived together. They don’t share most of their personal experiences with each other. It’s normal for them to have some type of miscommunication, since they REFUSE to communicate. Shane shouldn’t be able to read Ilya’s mind. He’s allowed to be mad or frustrated with Ilya’s micro aggression and with Ilya being rude.
Telepathy on the ice sure, bc they’re opponents who study each other/boyfriends who watch each other’s games for fun/rivals who love each other’s styles. But no telepathy in their day to day lives.
