The War and Peace nebula, a diffuse nebula in the constellation of Scorpius 5,500 light years away. Image credit - The Chart32 Team.
"This nebula was also given the name War and Peace Nebula by the Midcourse Space Experiment scientists because of its appearance. They said that in infrared images the bright, western part resembles a dove, while the eastern part looks like a skull.[6] It is located about 5500 light years away from Earth." -@wikipedia More about this type of HII Nebula: "Usually, a young star will ionize part of the same cloud from which it was born although only massive, hot stars can release sufficient energy to ionize a significant part of a cloud. In many emission nebulae, an entire cluster of young stars is doing the work." An entire cluster of young stars is doing the work. Via Flickr: Another wider view of the unofficially-named Lobster nebula in Scorpius or, NGC6357. It's in our galaxy, like most visible nebula. And is located in the sky, just beneath the Scorpion's tail, toward the bright hydrogen-rich bulge of the central milky way.
