Fallen Star by Lee Goldberg
~ Complex, intricately plotted, immersive crime story that kept my interest from beginning to end ~ Great addition the series ~ Couldn’t put it down ~
* Eve: dedicated, competent, focused, intelligent, tenacious, sees connections, growing in her profession, gets results, controversial and celebrated, still conflicted about the Eve Ronin TV series based on her life, still with Daniel though he is away most of this story
* Duncan: a good man, father figure to Eve, mentor, seasoned detective, supportive, smart, wise, great detective, loving husband and father, perfect job partner for Eve, interesting, and has a sense of humor, food focused at times, could be ready to retire
* Daniel: forensic anthropologist, intelligent, driven, excellent in his field, attracted to Eve and potentially a perfect love interest for her, hope to see more of him than in this book if he is meant to stay part of the series.
* Andrew Walker & Walter Sharpe: arson investigators, have a series of their own, called in to assist in part of an investigation, thinking about them and wondering when their next book will be out
* Andrew being there for Eve as support when she asked for his assistance
* Meeting Miles Cady from NTSB who is a friend of Sharp – wonder if he will show up again
* Getting to know some of the supporting characters better and wondering if acting Captain Beatie who took over from Captain Dubois when he resigned ~ Wonder if she will last longer supervising Eve
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* The twists, turns, red herrings, and eventual tying together of all the threads of the murders and most crimes that were under investigation
* The police procedural aspects of the story
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* The corrupt police and politicians, the greedy and amoral characters, thinking about how many were harmed mentally, emotionally, and lethally by the end of the story
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC – This is my honest review.
A spiraling case of betrayal, corruption, and murder could destroy Eve Ronin if she exposes it
A fifty-five-gallon drum washes up in the Malibu Lagoon stuffed with the corpse of Gene Dent, the key player in a bribery scandal that ensnared several local politicians. LASD detectives Eve Ronin and Duncan Pavone know the case—and all the likely suspects—well. Just as they begin their investigation, the sheriff publicly reveals evidence linking the crime to LA’s mayor.
But Eve and Duncan realize the bombshell allegation, true or not, arises from corruption within the sheriff’s own office…because they helped cover it up years ago. If the sheriff goes down, so will they.
Eve is agonizing over her moral dilemma when a helicopter crashes in the hillside below her Calabasas home. It’s not a coincidence. Eve soon discovers among the twisted wreckage and dead passengers shocking connections to her own past…and they lead straight to a fight for her life.
