REVIEW
The Ruler by Penelope Sky
Roman Republic book 1
~ Intense, emotionally charged, mafia style romance set in Sicily and Rome ~ Learned with a Golden retriever romance was after reading the book and would say this qualifies ~
What I liked:
* Constantine: âEmperorâ of Rome, descended from ancient Emperor Augustus, deals with criminals, well connected, wealthy, insightful, intelligent, protective, lethal, dedicated to his family and his work, drawn to Aurelia
* Aurelia: professional photographer, committed to Enzo at the beginning of the story, dealing with breakup when she meets Constantine, truly a push-pull type with Constantine, conflicted, attracted to Constantine
* The instant connection and chemistry between Constantine and Aurelia
* That Constantine fell first and his feelings didnât waver though he did get frustrated with her at times
* The hierarchy of the empire and the parts the three major powers have
* Medusa: Constantineâs German Shepherd trained as a police dog
* That Constantine was honest about who and what he was and also of his expectations
* That the story didnât shy away from the ugliness of Constantineâs job
* That I cared about the outcome
* Constantineâs family and friends and the closeness that they had
What I didnât like: * Enzoâs treatment of Aurelia and inability to be honest with her
* The way Aurelia kept waffling about what she really wanted with Constantine
* The criminals that Constantine had to deal with and trying to wrap my mind around the punishments meted out for the crimes committed
* Knowing that there are people in the world as evil as those that were punished in this book
* Not knowing how the series ends

BLURB
From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Sky, an unforgettable golden retriever mafia romance set in modern-day Italy, bursting with violence, dripping with blood, and crackling with desire. We spent weeks planning this trip to Sicily together. And I was damn sure going to enjoy it, even if my lying, cheating boyfriend just abandoned me. I push aside self-pity to venture out and take photographs. Later, I lock eyes with a stranger at a bar. This tattooed god, Constantine, is way out of my league, but to my surprise, heâs all inâevery inch. And up in his hotel suite, he claims me for his own. Over and over again. Constantineâs touch helps take away the pain, and he possesses me like Iâve never known. I fall hard. But beneath his kindness to me, to his family, to his dog, I sense danger. How could I know that to the city of Rome, heâs a brutal enforcer? When I trust the wrong man, I discover just how dangerous Constantine can be. He may call me sweetheart, but the Roman Republic calls him Emperorâand trembles at his feet.
