Neil likes guys and is all freaked out about it because he also likes girls (he doesnt wanna like guys) i think his family would be fine with it but he alreadygets bullied at school a lot and he feels like dating women is "easier" and acknowledging his feelings for guys just lits a target on his back.
Max doesn't like people 90% of the time so when he does he is more freaked out by his feelings in general than the fact that the person is a guy/girl. He doesn't care what people think of him and is considering going no/low contact with his family so it doesn't matter to him if they don't like it and if he liked someone enough to actually want to date them (scary) he'd value them above all that bs.
Nikki is the ultimate lesbian, she likes women so much that she has a new girl bsf CONSTANTLY whom she is practically dating but neither of them really talks about their feelings.
