Guys, I really need your help.

I’m sorry for posting this here, but I feel as if my studies and education are largely dependent on the inspiration and support my mother has given me. So it just feels right. I came home from college yesterday and my mother informed me that the pain she’s been experiencing is getting worse and worse. I’m starting to fear that if I don’t help her get surgery in 2019, she might be moving into a level of nerve damage that can’t be repaired. I want my mom to be able to live painlessly and without constantly being aware of every step she takes and how much it hurts. She’s sacrificed so much for me, and it’s now my turn to do whatever I can to see that she’s taken care of. Even a dollar would mean so much to us.

slang in italy depends very much on where you live, because we have tons of different regional languages and they are completely different from each other, but some expressions and sayings that we all use are: 

che palle! = means “what a pain!” used when something mildly bad happens, it can be considered a swear word but it’s used by basically everyone over the age of 10 

che figata!/che figo! = means “that’s cool!”, some parents consider it a swear word as well but it’s rare 

basta! = means “that’s enough!”, not really slang but one of the most useful italian expressions 

boh = means “i don’t know & i don’t care”, again, this is extremely useful and everyone uses it all the time 

fré/frà = literally “bro”, used just as you would use bro

bella fré/frà/raga/name of someone! = just a way to say “hey”, used especially among young people

raga = means “guys”, used as you would use guys

presa male/presa bene = used when you’re sad/happy about something that just happened, used by young people

scialla! = means “take it easy!”, used by young people

cazzeggiare = means “chilling”/”messing around”, can be considered a swear word

beccarsi = literally “to peck”, means “to see someone around”, used a lot 

figurati! = means “no need to worry about it!”, used when you do someone a favour and they thank you 

magari! = means “if only”/”i wish” 

mi fa cagare! = kind of a swear word, means “it sucks!”, literally “it makes me want to take a shit” 

che schifo! = just like above, a bit less rude 

dai! = meaning “come on!” 

meno male! = means “thank god!” but not literally ( thank god = grazie a Dio) 

essere un po’ fuori = means “to be a little crazy”, not really offensive, literally “to be a little out (of your mind)”

ci sei o ci fai? = means “are you crazy or what?” 

mettersi insieme = means “to date someone”

mollare qualcuno = means “to dump someone” as in breaking up

cade a fagiolo! = basically a metaphor for precision, literally “to the bean”  

avere un chiodo fisso = means “being fixated on something”, literally “having a nail fixed (on your head)” 

come dio comanda = means “as things should be done”, literally “as god commands”

non t’allargare! = means “don’t go too far”, used when someone is pushing it with their behaviour a bit too much 

parla come mangi! = means “keep it simple”, literally “talk as you eat” 

chissenefrega/chi se ne frega = means “who cares”, some people don’t like it because it comes from the fascist era 

Take a practice test for each subject and note down what you either get wrong or aren’t quite sure about!

I’m not exactly sure if your commentary is a specific IB style assessment (such as an FOA or an IOC) or just something your teacher is doing to help you learn, so I’ll keep this very broad.

How to analyse it:

Look for general speech conventions

this has come examples

is it a formal or an informal speech?

is it a speech made for a cabinet of ‘experts’ or the general public?

what is the tone? (e.g. what emotions does the author try to generate)

how is it structured? What is the main topic?

to do this well I suggest just using a pen and highlighter and going through the entire text a lot of times

I’m not an english teacher, so I won’t be the best person to ask about how to analyse texts

if you’re having trouble, tell your teacher and (if they’re open to it) get a lunchtime, sit down with them, and just analyse it together

I even like to analyse ‘norma’ stuff. E.g. when I talk about 1984 by George Orwell I often mention that his writing style lacks a lot of literary elements, and it usually short and straight to the point, which I believe in a way sort of parallels newspeak

How to talk about it

make a structure (you probably know this)

some people like to “chunk” the piece and talk about it in paragraphs

I like to talk about it through themes, and use the stylistic devices to support those themes (if you want I can upload my IOC structure, but I can’t tell you if it’s good since we don’t get grades for it till the iB moderates it)

speak with confidence (people are biased when they gives grades, confidence makes it seem like you’re actually knowledgable about the subject)

instead of saying “um” take pauses, it will give the audience time to digest what you’re saying and it sounds more organised

quote the piece. Every time you say something about the text, quote it

That’s about it for a general commentary. However, if you’re doing an FOA (which I feel like you might be) just send me a message saying that’s the commentary. FOAs can be done like what I’ve written above, but I think it’s more fun to use the creativity allowed from them tbh.
