not a word, but what casual slang (that's not offensive) do you know in Italian?
slang in italy depends very much on where you live, because we have tons of different regional languages and they are completely different from each other, but some expressions and sayings that we all use are:Â
che palle! = means âwhat a pain!â used when something mildly bad happens, it can be considered a swear word but itâs used by basically everyone over the age of 10Â
che figata!/che figo! = means âthatâs cool!â, some parents consider it a swear word as well but itâs rareÂ
basta! = means âthatâs enough!â, not really slang but one of the most useful italian expressionsÂ
boh = means âi donât know & i donât careâ, again, this is extremely useful and everyone uses it all the timeÂ
frĂ©/frĂ = literally âbroâ, used just as you would use bro
bella frĂ©/frĂ /raga/name of someone! = just a way to say âheyâ, used especially among young people
raga = means âguysâ, used as you would use guys
presa male/presa bene = used when youâre sad/happy about something that just happened, used by young people
scialla! = means âtake it easy!â, used by young people
cazzeggiare = means âchillingâ/âmessing aroundâ, can be considered a swear word
beccarsi = literally âto peckâ, means âto see someone aroundâ, used a lotÂ
figurati! = means âno need to worry about it!â, used when you do someone a favour and they thank youÂ
magari! = means âif onlyâ/âi wishâÂ
mi fa cagare! = kind of a swear word, means âit sucks!â, literally âit makes me want to take a shitâÂ
che schifo! = just like above, a bit less rudeÂ
dai! = meaning âcome on!âÂ
meno male! = means âthank god!â but not literally ( thank god = grazie a Dio)Â
essere un poâ fuori = means âto be a little crazyâ, not really offensive, literally âto be a little out (of your mind)â
ci sei o ci fai? = means âare you crazy or what?âÂ
mettersi insieme = means âto date someoneâ
mollare qualcuno = means âto dump someoneâ as in breaking up
cade a fagiolo! = basically a metaphor for precision, literally âto the beanâ Â
avere un chiodo fisso = means âbeing fixated on somethingâ, literally âhaving a nail fixed (on your head)âÂ
come dio comanda = means âas things should be doneâ, literally âas god commandsâ
non tâallargare! = means âdonât go too farâ, used when someone is pushing it with their behaviour a bit too muchÂ
parla come mangi! = means âkeep it simpleâ, literally âtalk as you eatâÂ
chissenefrega/chi se ne frega = means âwho caresâ, some people donât like it because it comes from the fascist eraÂ
if any italian wants to add something, feel free to do it!Â
