I’m really curious what the audience of this blog is. I know I’m biased as to what people know bc I go out of my way to listen to a lot of anime openings, watch a lot of ranking lists on youtube, do online anime quizzes etc. but I do feel like there’s openings to very popular shows like Frieren that a confusing number of people say they’ve never heard before.
It's really interesting looking at what songs people as a collective seem to know. If I had to guess based on your ask, you are younger than most people who follow this blog. While it is true that Frieren is a very popular show, it only came out in 2023. A lot of people my age haven't seen it yet, especially if they don't keep up with seasonals.
The following songs are ones where knowing the song and/or the anime make up more than 50% of the vote totals:
1 - "Pokemon Theme" or "Gotta catch 'em all!" written by John Siegler and John Loeffler and performed by Jason Paige (Pokemon 1997)
6 - My Generation by The Who (A Silent Voice 2016)
9 - Sleep Walking Orchestra by BUMP OF CHICKEN (Dungeon Meshi 2024)
15 - Tank! by Seatbelts (Cowboy Bebop 1998)
20 - CHANGE THE WORLD by V6 (Inuyasha 2000)
42 - 99 by MOB CHOIR (Mob Psycho 100 2016)
44 - THE HERO !! ~Okoreru Kobushi ni Hi wo Tsukero~ by JAM Project (One Punch Man 2015)
67 - Easy Breezy by chelmico (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken 2020)
71 - Resonance by T.M.Revolution (Soul Eater 2008)
73 - Mezase Pokémon Master by Rica Matsumoto, THE JADOES (Pokemon 1997)
75 - Guren no Yumiya by Linked Horizon (Attack on Titan 2013)
86 - Moonlight Densetsu by Dali (Sailor Moon 1992)
We can probably ignore A Silent Voice for the sake of this post since My Generation is already a very popular song. The oldest anime on this list is Sailor Moon 1992 and the newest is Dungeon Meshi 2024.
I think that Dungeon Meshi could be explained away by my follower count at the time. Back when this blog first started, the only people who saw it were people who know my personal blog and people in anime tags. Now more people follow the blog from seeing their friends reblog polls and those people are less likely to be following seasonals and modern anime in general than the people who originally followed this blog.
Now, the song that I actually think is the most interesting is Easy Breezy by chelmico from Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken 2020. That one post is the first time I broke 200 votes on a poll with 208 votes. No other song came close until Moonlight Densetsu by Dali from Sailor Moon 1992 which blew that record out of the water with 265 votes.
Now why did Easy Breezy get so many votes? Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken came out in 2020. This is when a lot of people in my country (USA) were getting back into anime because they couldn't work. This isn't meant to discount Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken as an amazing anime, it is, but I think without the pandemic starting in 2020 not nearly as many people would have seen it.
I remember being on Tumblr at the time and seeing people who never talked about anime once posting about Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken obsessively.
Maybe if those Frieren polls were posted three or four years from now more people would have recognized them. Obviously this is not scientific in any way shape or form but from the evidence I've gathered on this blog that is my best guess as to why seemingly popular anime like Frieren, Jujutsu Kaisen and Dan Da Dan are not being recognized on this blog.
