What We Know About Wavecatcher Miyu/Puppet

Wavecatcher Miyu Sahara, still known by her codename Puppet in the Metaverse, is the summer event variant of Puppet. She is explained to stay in her swimsuit even in the Metaverse because the summer event involves a separate pocket of the Metaverse that formed around the beach, and the public’s cognition is that people wear swimsuits at the beach.

This post focuses on Wavecatcher Miyu’s differences from the original Puppet unit. Note that they are separate units, but cannot be used on the player’s active team at the same time. Notably, Wavecatcher Miyu can’t share weapons with Puppet, unlike some other variants.

Wavecatcher Miyu was added to the game alongside the second half of the 2025 summer event (Version 4.3.2), and her appearance matches her appearance within that event. In other words, this is the outfit that Miyu wears to the beach, though she’s not a Phantom Thief, so she never actually enters the Metaverse with the team.

Miyu also seems to be learning how to surf, though the developers implied she's not very good at it yet.

Wavecatcher Miyu also had a special animated promo video focused on her.

Miyu originally wanted to spend time at the beach with just her and Wonder, but quickly integrates into the group working at Chigusa, and wants to help out as well. As she learns more about what's been going on, she becomes increasingly motivated to help investigate the supernatural rumors and help support Chigusa.

Wavecatcher Miyu’s voice lines in-game and in-combat tend to be more summer/ocean-related than Puppet’s, though her attitude isn’t drastically different otherwise.

Wavecatcher Miyu uses Wavecatcher Nemertes in combat, whose appearance is primarily a recolor of the original Nemertes. Wavecatcher Nemertes is categorized as an Ice type, and resists Ice while being weak to Bless.

Unlike the original Nemertes, Wavecatcher Nemertes is a Sweeper Persona, meaning she’s good at dealing with groups of enemies, and her trait makes it so that in combat, Wavecatcher Miyu can mount her surfboard and activate "Sea Domain", which consumes SP to release her "Tide Surge and Clouds" attack.

Miyu cannot be knocked down or inflicted with mental status ailments while in Sea Domain, but also cannot use melee or gun attacks, or items.

When Miyu gains any status, Sea Domain's duration is extended one round.

Tide Surge and Clouds deals ice damage to all enemies based on Miyu's attack stat, and grants Miyu one level of "Thousand Waves" (stacks up to 4). Each level of Thousand Waves she has increases the damage dealt and SP cost of Tide Surge and Clouds.

Tide Surge and Clouds is considered an additional effect, and thus cannot knock down enemies.

Also, her max SP is increased to 200, but she starts combat with 0 SP, gaining 15 SP on each teammate's turn (not counting Miyu's own turn; the SP value increases based on her SP recovery stat). Based on the cumulative amount of SP she's gained during the battle (including any that went over her max), Miyu gains various buffs:

100 SP: Attack stat buffed by 10%,

200 SP: Damage dealt buffed by 10%,

300 SP: Critical hit rate buffed by 12%,

400 SP: Critical hit effect buffed by 24%

Her first ice attack skill hits all enemies with a 100% chance to freeze them for two turns, then gives Miyu 40 SP (value increases based on her SP recovery stat, and can exceed Miyu's max SP); her second ice attack skill hits all enemies, doing increased damage based on how many levels of Thousand Waves Miyu has, then ends Sea Domain and clears all levels of Thousand Waves (this skill's damage counts as an additional effect); and her support skill activates Sea Domain, allowing her to automatically release Tide Surge and Clouds at the end of every teammate's turn if she has enough SP (by default, Tide Surge and Clouds costs 30 SP, but every level of Thousand Waves increases this cost by another 30).

Her passive skills buff Miyu's attack stat based on her SP recovery stat, and buff Miyu's damage dealt while Sea Domain is active.

In combat, her melee weapon is a surfboard, while her ranged weapon is a bubble gun. Her Highlight is shown from 3:21 - 3:35 in this video, and it deals ice damage to all enemies (damage dealt is increased if Sea Domain is active).

Her recommended card sets are 1) 4 of Cups (Luxury) + Knight of Swords (Focus), 2) 8 of Coins (Prudence) + King of Coins (Determination).

But then I remembered all the different Alts so why not? What are your thoughts on Berry plus the Alts of the (female) characters?

Hah, yeah, Berry's the only new one since you last asked!

Wonder's costumes are so elaborate they're almost like alts, if that makes you feel any better. I'm guessing (besides the obvious "girl characters sell better" assumption that seems to drive a lot of decisions in this industry) a big part of why only female characters have gotten alts so far is that there's just... a lot more female characters than male ones right now, heh? Out of the 29 original playable characters currently in this game, only 10 are male, and we know the next two (at least) are going to be female as well. But I'm getting a bit off track.

Same disclaimers as always; For thieves, I’m just commenting on what the design looks like it’s doing/trying to do, and whether I think it works and I like it. For Personas, I’m not really taking into account how well they do (or don’t) represent the figure they’re supposed to be, just how well I think the design gets its concept across, and does (or doesn’t) match its thief. And of course, these are all just my personal opinions!

What We Know About Puppet

Miyu Sahara, codename Puppet, is the runaway daughter of a member of the local House of Representatives, and an aspiring puppeteer. She joins the team as a "Phantom Idol", or cognitive teammate.

A separate, summer event version of Miyu was added in Version 4.3.2, and has a separate post documenting her combat information. Note that Wavecatcher Miyu cannot be on the same active team as Puppet, and they do not use the same weapons.

Her files are named with the codename "Umi" instead of her canon codename Puppet. The exact significance of this, if any, is unknown.

Her Japanese voice actress is Kana Ichinose.

Miyu is a Confidant of Wonder’s, though exactly what the earliest point it becomes available at is unclear, as she was added in a later update. Her Confidant focuses on her interest in puppetry, and her struggles with performing her Little Mermaid puppet show on the streets after running away from home.

Miyu's parents' names are later revealed in her Confidant to be 幸次 (possibly "Koji"; her father) and 陽子 (possibly "Yoko"; her mother) Sahara. As this isn't voiced, these readings are unconfirmed, however.

Info on her in the real world has been translated as: "A girl in the first year of high school, the daughter of a member of the local House of Representatives. The appearance looks docile and polite, but in fact, she has her own opinions. Because she violated her parents’ ardent expectations in future planning, she ran away from home and was determined to support herself with both hands."

Her description in-game was later changed to: "A 16-year-old girl who left her wealthy family and became a puppeteer. She ran away from home to resist her parents' forced lifestyle, and decided to live on her own. At first glance, she seems docile and polite, but she also has a vibrant side."

This is reflected in her Confidant, where she is friendly and polite, and very dedicated to performing her Little Mermaid show with her mermaid puppet on the streets. After getting to know Wonder, she becomes much more playful, and likes to make jokes about her confidence in her own cuteness. This extends to both assertions that she'll be more famous someday, as well as an occasional joke about a potential romantic relationship between them. The latter culminates in Miyu confessing her love for Wonder during her Rank 15 event, and ultimately deciding she'll win him over eventually even if he turns her down.

This confidence is partially false, but not entirely. She uses it to cover up her own doubts and insecurities- for instance, moments of sadness and uncertainty after her puppet is broken or Wonder doesn't return her feelings- but there is an element of resilience and determination behind it. While she doesn't seem to like showing this weakness, and uses false confidence to bounce back from it, it seems this confidence is only false until she regains her footing. She does genuinely seem to believe in her cuteness and puppeteering skills eventually winning over the world (and Wonder).

Due to her situation, Miyu frequently has to lean on others- particularly, Wonder and her apartment's landlady- and Miyu seems to have accepted this is necessary for the moment, but repeatedly promises to pay Wonder back later, when she's famous. She becomes frustrated at herself sometimes for how much she needs him to help her, and it gives the impression that Miyu would rather be entirely independent. However, she has the self-awareness to recognize when that's simply not possible, and seems to cope with this by leaning on her certainty that she'll be able to even things out again in the future.

Miyu has a very rocky relationship with family. Her parents aren't at all supportive of her dreams, and in fact got rid of some of her belongings related to her interests when they first found out she wanted to pursue those dreams rather than their own goals for her. She also taunts a man her parents hired to sabotage her by telling him that they'll promise anything, but ultimately just want to use people, and have no intention of fulfilling those promises, preferring to talk their way out of things and preserve themselves above all else. Due to the nature of the situation, it's difficult to tell exactly how truthful she was being, but it matches up with other information about them. Miyu mentions to Wonder that she always wished she had siblings (as she's an only child), and considering she latches onto Wonder and begins to call him "big bro" (oniisama) after he protects her, it's implied she wishes she had sibling(s) in order to have more protection (emotional, or otherwise) from her parents, and perhaps more positive familial relationships in general.

Her Persona is Nemertes (based on the Nereid of unerring good council), and functions as a navigator. While she’s summoned, Puppet sits inside her, as the inside of the circular part of her seems to loosely resemble a submarine, or some other underwater exploration vehicle.

Nemertes is an Elucidator Persona, the designation used for navigators, and her trait makes it so that when she gives a shield, teammates receive additional buffs based on how many levels of "Sea Guardian" they have. She has three support skills, which have cooldowns to use, but can be called in at will otherwise: the first gives all teammates a shield and restores a bit of SP, and when the shield is broken her action cooldown lowers; the second gives one teammate a shield, lowers their weakness damage received, and gives them two levels each of guard and Sea Guardian; and the third gives all teammates a shield, which is strengthened the more levels of Sea Guardian they have, and if they have at least four, their damage also increases. Her passive skills further buff stats, increase the value of shields based on how many levels of Sea Guardian the team collectively has, and also buff defense based on Sea Guardian levels.

While she doesn’t strictly have a melee or ranged weapon as a navigator, P5X does have tools that the navigators use for their abilities, also obtained through the weapon gacha, and hers are sea scooters (though this term may be translated differently in an official translation).

Her recommended card sets are 1) 2 of Swords (Peace) + Knight of Coins (Belief).

What We Know About Puppet

This teammate, whose Japanese name has been translated as "Miyu Sawara" but not been officially confirmed, codename Puppet, is the runaway daughter of a member of the local House of Representatives. She joins the team as a "Phantom Idol", or cognitive teammate.

Her files are named with the codename "Umi" instead of her canon codename Puppet. The exact significance of this, if any, is unknown.

Her Japanese voice actress is Kana Ichinose.

A text icon appears for her in the files, suggesting she will eventually appear in the real world and have some contact with Wonder. With this, and also as she is a Phantom Idol, she’s likely to be a Confidant of Wonder’s eventually.
