Mexicans Demand Justice for Disappeared Students of Ayotzinapa at NED vs MEX Match
It was the 43rd minute of the Netherlands vs. Mexico match when chants of “Justice! Justice!” rang throughout Amsterdam Arena. Thousands of Mexicans were there to witness a rematch of the now infamous ‘No era penal’ game that eliminated Mexico for the World Cup this past summer, but most seemed more concerned with making sure the world knew of the 43 disappeared students back home. On September 26, 43 students from the Escuela Normal Rural de Ayotzinapa were forcibly disappeared by the State in Iguala, Guerrero. Mexican civil society and Mexicans around the world have responded by mounting marches and demonstrations of the kind unseen since the EZLN led an armed revolt in 1994. Mexico beat the the Netherlands 3-2 with two goals from Carlos Vela and one from Chicharito Hernández, but the real winner was Mexican solidarity.
