I'm either paranoid or legitimately worried.
So I had a small, marble-sized lump in my neck in April 2011. Since my mom is a nurse, I asked for her opinion. She said to keep an eye on it because it was probably just a swollen lymph node; most swollen nodes only last 10-14 days, and mine was gone 9 days after I noticed it, so I didn’t think much else of it.
About three months ago, I noticed that I had another lump in the same spot on my neck. I forgot about it for a while because it was never painful or anything. I checked that side of my neck about two weeks ago and found it again, and it is STILL swollen, and I can’t really tell if it’s bigger than its initial size. I’m getting kind of worried though; I know some people who have lived with swollen nodes for 30 years, but I also know that it could be an early symptom of lymphoma, thyroid cancer, etc. There was a kid in my math class last semester who had cancer in his neck that started off as a lump.
I’m hoping to tell my mom about it tomorrow (if I remember) so I can try to make a doctor appointment this week to get it checked out, but I have no idea who to even go to. I can’t go to my pediatrician because I’m 19, but I haven’t had a physical for two years so I don’t actually have a general physician right now. Do I try to find a new (possibly temporary) general physician? Do I go straight to an ENT doc for this lump?
I’m just terrified, and I’d appreciate any prayers, good thoughts, whatever you do. I really hope it’s nothing serious, and I really really hope my waiting three months to start worrying about it hasn’t let any possible infection/disease advance too far. It also doesn't help much that I'm kind of terrified of the prospect of surgery.
