dont know if you guys have seen this article that anna meixner shared on instagram today.
members of the austrian women's hockey team have come forward about their unequal and misogynistic treatment by the austrian ice hockey federation. they are given very poor accomodations, they have to sleep in bunk beds and change in unheated rooms, and they are given the ill-fitting hand me downs of the men's equipment
they are not compensated fairly and their work and school is not taken into account. they requested a meeting to discuss the new compensation model and the federation did not care and even fired multiple staff members with whom the women's team had positive relations. the team has hired a lawyer to represent them because the situation has escalated so far. multiple of the team's best players will not be attending the upcoming event in slovakia and they are even considering skipping worlds if treatment does not improve. the team feels harassed and bullied by the federation!
this is just awful and completely unnecessary treatment by the federation. i am also so proud of the austrian women's team for advocating for themselves and for how successful they've been in spite of this treatment!
Die Situation im österreichischen Eishockey ist komplett eskaliert: Die Leistungsträgerinnen des Nationalteams sind von der Führungsebene de

"Do you ever dream of land?" The whale asks the tuna.
"No." Says the tuna, "Do you?"
"I have never seen it." Says the whale, "but deep in my body, I remember it."
"Why do you care," says the tuna, "if you will never see it."
"There are bones in my body built to walk through the forests and the mountains." Says the whale.
"They will disappear." Says the tuna, "one day, your body will forget the forests and the mountains."
"Maybe I don't want to forget," Says the whale, "The forests were once my home."
"I have seen the forests." Whispers the salmon, almost to itself.
"Tell me what you have seen," says the whale.
"The forests spawned me." Says the salmon. "They sent me to the ocean to grow. When I am fat with the bounty of the ocean, I will bring it home."
"Why would the forests seek the bounty of the oceans?" Asks the whale. "They have bounty of their own."
"You forget," says the salmon, "That the oceans were once their home."
Last year I finally had an excuse to illustrate this simple little Tumblr story I've had bookmarked forever for class.
I hope you like it :]
You know Jones soda cap, as a tumblr user i can actually say i think I have.
single funniest entry in Star Trek predicting the future
Is it the freedom
It's the venting. In the USA, dryers have massive exhaust vents to the outside of the room/building that take the hot wet away and leave hot dry behind. In many other countries, dryers do not generally have external exhaust vents, and simply fill the room they are in with the hot wet, which may or may not be enough to actually remove the hot wet from the clothing depending on how well ventilated the room itself is.
for this reason 1) you generally can't leave the dryer open in winter without causing a draft and 2) sometimes when you're walking around outside in the US the world will suddenly smell of clean laundry because you're near someone's house and their dryer is running
And 3) Eventually your drier stops drying things so well and you have to hire somebody to bring a ladder up to the vent (either high up an exterior wall or on the literal roof) and clear out the accumulated lint and cruft blocking it
You ought to do this regularly even if the dryer efficiency remains the same, because dryer lint is fantastically competent at burning your damn house down if you let it catch fire.
I'm in Australia (no exhaust vents), and I've found that if your dryer starts making hot wet laundry, you first clean out the lint trap that you already know about and clean every time, and then you go looking for the second secret lint trap that nobody told you about and clean out the year's worth of lint in there that you were blissfully unaware of. The dryer will now mostly dry your laundry again, and give you either hot dry laundry or hot just-very-slightly-damp laundry.
This reminds me of the story about the couple who kept cleaning two different dryer vents and were confused why their so never cleaned the lint
That post was what first prompted me to go looking for a possible second lint trap
I'm genuinely appalled that dryers outside the US are not vented to the outside world. That much moisture just...builds up in your house/apartment every time you use your dryer?? Does that not lend itself to mold growth over time?
Mine recondenses the water into a little tub that I empty into a sink after use. I could also get a plumber in to vent the water directly into the greywater but I prefer being able to have the dryer in a part of the room with no direct water system access.
That makes much more sense tbh. I was envisioning a steam room and the associated drywall moisture damage every time you do laundry, like "at that point I would just opt for a clothesline" lol.
(Which we do still use in the US, despite the popular conception that we all have dryers. Not as common as it once was, but I've lived several places where we used a clothesline bc we had a washer but no dryer.)
In Australia most people use clotheslines all the time, and even those of us who have dryers tend to only use them when the weather is too wet to make line drying practical. Electricity is expensive and sunlight is free. Can't speak for people living in city apartments and suchlike though.
I grew up in Aotearoa and formerly lived in the US and now live in the UK and yes every dryer I have ever seen is absolutely vented to the outdoors???
What are the Australians doing?
Line drying, mostly.
I’m in the uk and every dryer ive seen has either had a removable condenser or has been piped into the wall/grey water like derin said. Most people over here use a clothes line or horse.
I'm sorry, a clothes line or a WHAT?
A clothes horse
They come in many shapes, most of them designed to fold away easily when you're not drying or airing anything.
In the USA, we call those (clothes/laundry) drying racks. There's a bit of variation depending on the brand advertising, but I've never seen them called a clothes horse.
I've only ever heard/seen "clotheshorse" used to refer to a particularly fashionable/fashion-oriented person, typically one with an extensive wardrobe.
They call people that because they are likening the people to the drying racks, acting like their purpose is to hang and display an absurd number of clothes on their bodies.
Why is that first drying rack labeled "costs from 3p an hour to run"?
My guess is that it might be from an ad comparing a clotheshorse setup to a dryer or something, and the 3p refers to the running cost of a space heater. You need a room to be a reasonable temperature to air dry clothes, so if you live somewhere particularly cold then you need to heat the room.
I think it’s actually a heated airer. You plug it in and the rods heat up to dry the clothes faster. I had one in my old flat and it was life changing.
I'm in the UK and my dryer is a condenser (as described by derin). There's also a cheaper kind of dryer where you have to either plumb it in OR, supposedly, hang the hose out of a window.
I empty mine's tank and lint trap after every use. However, it does occasionally stop working and then I have to go around the back and clean it's grease trap. BUT I think that's a fairly niche issue.
ETA oh I am also aware of the second secret lint trap. Real bitch to clean out.
@derinthescarletpescatarian WHERE DO I FIND THE SECRET SECOND LINT TRAP I AM GOING NITS PULLING MY DRYER APART
I have one lint trap inside the door, just in front of the barrel, and another on the front of the machine behind an unlabelled panel.

the thing heated rivalry fandom really needs to get into is how wealthy russians decorate their homes, incl those who've moved to north america. i want to see HR fic where Ilya lives in a mcmansion with gilt and brocade and fake fruit bowls

there's something kind of you-can't-go-home-again about being a hockey fan in terms of, like, your "first" roster is always going to be "your" roster, no matter how long ago it was or how many people have been swapped around, how many trades, how many retirements, how many free agencies you live through. it'll never be exactly like that again. it probably wasn't even exactly like that for a full season. i know there's a lot of jokes about "how do athletes deal with trades. what about their friends?" but it's also, like, what about us? what about our friends? to me, the penguins are always going to be, like, brian boyle and jason zucker and brian dumoulin and evan rodrigues and john marino, but for other people, the penguins go back even further than that. hags and horny and nealer and flower. you don't have to go too far down on reddit to find people who think about mario and jagr. i was a fairweather bandwagon fan for the avs when they won the cup and that exact lineup holds its shape in my mind perfectly, but talk to someone who follows the team for real and they have a tyson jost-shaped hole in their picture of the cup team that's still not healed over. i just love that. the inherent melancholia of being a sports fan is not knowing you're in the good ol' days when you're in them and then trade deadline comes. and the trade deadline comes every year.
reminder for all hockey fans:
netflix is making a hockey show called "the sticks" that is based on a very real tragedy that occured in canada in 2018.
the show follows a minnesota high school team after their bus crashes and coming back to hockey afterwards.
in 2018, the humboldt broncos' (a junior A team made up of 18-22 year olds) bus was hit by a tractor trailer on a highway intersection. 16 people (10 players, 2 coaches, and 4 team staff members) were killed, along with 13 other players severely injured.
the memory of the humboldt broncos crash is an incredibly sensitive subject carrying a lot of trauma to both the survivors, their families, and deceased's families. the trajectory of hockey in canada was changed significantly after this tragedy.
despite this, netflix has decided to make a show using the death of young hockey players for profit. they did not consult the survivors, nor the deceased's families. they stole a canadian story for a feel-good cash grab.
i understand wanting to watch shows about hockey, but this is not the show to watch. do not give it attention, as the humboldt broncos' memories deserve to be theirs and theirs alone to share.

Hiii do you know what’s going on with hockey rpf? It feels like everyone is vague posting about yet another fourth wall break but it seems worse? Have a nice day!
a well-known fic writer is publishing a romance novel about a hockey player who gets sent fanfic about himself and his teammate, reads it, and realizes he’s in love with said teammate. the author’s official bio on the publisher’s website mentions ao3 explicitly. I personally think it’s in pretty poor taste, especially the premise, but I also think the genie’s out of the bottle re: fandom being super mainstream and very publicly exposed and that’s not really this one person’s fault. that said… I assume m/m hockey romance in tradpub is still a fairly niche subgenre of romance and if you’re in those spaces you’re probably already at least peripherally aware of men’s hockey rpf so like… I don’t ACTUALLY think this is going to bring a huge amount of new negative attention to hrpf. I just think, again, it’s kinda in poor taste and definitely at least feels like a violation of the fannish social contract which is why people are reacting so strongly.
Why is pet play always dogs anyway
