More on alcohol! This is Myrtus communis, the common myrtle, also known as "myrtia" in Greek. It is a species of flowering plant in the myrtle family Myrtaceae. Mirto liqueur is obtained from the myrtle plant through the alcoholic maceration of the berries or a compound of berries and leaves. Myrtle grows freely in Sardinia, where the liqueur was consumed as part of a local niche market, in two varieties: the one with black berries and the other one with the white ones; legend has it that, long ago, Sardinian bandits introduced this particular usage of the plant to the nearby island of Corsica, where the liqueur has also been considered a traditional drink since then There are two varieties of myrtle liqueur: Mirto rosso (simply murta) is made with the berries of the black variety and is sweet. Today’s #oneadayplant is the glorious Myrtus communis (Common Myrtle). A gem of an evergreen shrub! . If you have ever been to Sardinia or Corsica you may have treated the sweet, delicious liqueur Mirto made from the berries. Worth a try if not. . It would be fair to say that Myrtle doesn’t do well in very wet, or cold sites, or in spots with desiccating winds. However, when provided with sun, a degree of shelter and ideally a wall for radiated heat, you get an excellent large shrub or small tree. Evergreen with dark, satin-sheened green leaves on red stems. The bark, in time, is beautiful and gently peeling. That will take some time to develop however. . What most people it grow for are these gorgeous, pure-white, sweetly scented flowers followed by small, purple berries. It should be considered more as a topiary specimen in sheltered spots as it is pretty trouble and pest free in my experience. . Well worth growing.
