Notes from nursing school: OB
OB is absolutely the worst ever. Our class is steeped in cissexism, our instructor is pathologically unable to refer to our hypothetical/actual patients as anything other than "the mama" (so condescending!), "the mother", and "the woman." (Why am I so bugged? Because it's unprofessional, that's why!) A friend/rad ally tried to call our instructor in on it by talking about a trans* patient she was caring for and how uncomfortable the constant gendering of pregnancy/being the birth parent, and all the instructor said was "Well, that's an interesting perspective. Anywaaay..."
Every time that someone makes a wisecrack about "well, you boys couldn't possibly be pregnant" at some of my cishet classmates during lab I visibly flinch. And yet, the jokes go on.
When I took one of the TAs aside and asked her to not aggressively misgender me (ladies! girls! women!) inexplicably while calling me a name that is pretty much only ever used for masculine-identified folx, she told me she "has lots of friends who are transgender!" (seriously? if you did, maybe you would introduce yourself by name AND pronouns, just sayin. tell my other classmate the one about your black friend, ok?). AND THEN SHE TRIED TO HUG ME. Aww, hell no!
Judging from my recent experiences, I am fairly certain that most UW professors have a mental block on accountability, with the exception of [_____] and [__________]. And [__________] was so awesome that she recently left to take a post-doc position all the way across the country. Bogus!
