I had a fucking phenomenal time with SLARPG. I wouldn't blame anyone for reading the name and thinking of this game as something nonserious, but in reality, it's a genuinely moving story with some extremely skillful writing. The game can be really poignant, or deeply uncomfortable, or totally hilarious, just depending on what the scene calls for. The setting is really rich, and every character is well developed and genuine. All the conflict--inner turmoil, romantic tension, platonic and romantic relationship issues--it's all handled with a great deal of tact and maturity without feeling heavy-handed at all. I could also go on about how fucking impressive the combat system is and how good it feels, and how satisfying and effective the level of customization is, but I don't really think need to, beyond acknowledging that yeah, it's fucking cool.
As a short bit of my own history with the game, I played (I guess beta tested? I don't think I was a very good tester, I remember submitting maybe one bug report, but my deadname is in the credits) the fangame that SLARPG is a re-imagining (?) of. That game somewhat formed my expectations for SLARPG as being comical, maybe sort of parodic, perhaps somewhat basic but well-made overall. My expectations were blown out of the water. It's clear how much thought, passion, and genuine love went into every aspect of this game. I'm not the first person to sing its praises, but I just want to put my compliments into the compliment jar as well. I really think people should play this game.
