So I had Hakata (Fukuoka) style hotpot or motsunabe. We opted for the pork belly as 'newbies' as the host told us Westerners usually are scared of 'weirder' parts like the traditional mizutaki (offal intestines and tripe) usually used in the dish and that the belly was a good intro (though neither my friend nor I are unused to offals or have the American squeamishness towards animal parts).
We did end up getting beef tongue and intestine teppanyaki too as a way to still get some of those yummy parts anyway.
It was really delicious. It was warm out for NYC in november but like.. This didn't overheat us? The broth was delicious and not heavy and the waiters helped out with cooking the hotpot for us.
It was really fun!
I'm really into regional cuisines and their variations and all my research on Fukuoka has shown suuuch an interesting food culture originating from that city, so I'm glad I got to try something outside the general tonkatsu ramen that seems to be the majority of Hakata-style food that we get here in the US.

名古屋から九州へ。
新幹線で名古屋→博多に到着。
From Nagoya to the Kyushu region by Shinkansen.
First, I arrived Hakata in Fukuoka.
まずは、昼食に、博多ラーメンを食す。
Then, I ate Hakata ramen for lunch.

福岡といえば、グルメ。博多ラーメン、モツ鍋、明太子は押さえて置きたいところ。

その後、電車を乗り継ぎ、太宰府天満宮。
After that, I changed the train and went to Dazaifu Tenmangu.

学問の神様として、日本全国から人が集まる。
As a learning god, people gather from all over Japan.
神社でお参り後、通りのお店を散策して、バスで博多へ戻る。
After visiting the shrine, take a walk around the street shops and return to Hakata by bus.
そして、夕食はモツ鍋。
And I ate the motu nabe for the dinner.

もつの量も多く、締めのちゃんぽんは食べ放題。
食べログ1位、雑誌にも載っているが、次は老舗のザ・これが博多のモツ鍋!みたいなものを食べてみたいと思った。なんとなくチェーン店っぽかったので。味も◎だったけど。

「出張でそっちに行くから久し振りに飲みに行こうぜ」と先週末に金沢の友人から電話が…ん?久し振り?10年以上振りは久し振りを通り越してるやん ( ̄▽ ̄;) 始まりから懐かしい話題で盛り上がり4時間以上も同じ店に (⌒‐⌒) もつ鍋、きれいな中トロ、その他、〆はちゃんぽん麺を鍋に入れて⤴⤴⤴ どれも美味しかった~ (⌒0⌒) ご馳走してくれるなんてなんて優しい奴!会社では互いにそれなりの立場になり、互いにおっさん化していたところもなんか良かった~⤴⤴⤴ 明日も飲み会があるのを忘れてた (ー_ー;) 2018-3-6
Motsu-nabe....my true love. First experienced in Kyoto with my bro/sis-in-law, found again in Kanazawa. It's beef small intestine bits in a savory broth, piled with cabbage, onion, and bean sprouts. We didnt even realize this was intestine when we first ate it. It is more like pork belly bits or cracklins, very fatty and rich. Apparently, they get the intestine from wagyu or another fancy type of cow, which makes Japanese beef small intestine practically a different product than intestine from anywhere else. I've seen it touted as a healthy meal, but anything that tastes like cracklins can't be all that good for you.
