So I was reading a scientific paper about animal sound production that’s been in my tabs for a while for some reason. Because I figure I should actually recognize the fish clades it names, I’ve been doing image searches on unfamiliar names. One of these ended up being ‘mormyrids‘, which look like this:
Um... okay.
So of course I want to know more about these weirdos, so I follow the images to their source, which happens to be this website completely devoted to mormyrids???
It’s a decently-constructed website that appears to be run by this one guy who just. does research all about mormyrids I guess. The blog hasn’t been updated since 2018, but he has kept up with the literature - the most recent link was posted in late April 2020.
There are other myspecies.info pages upon a quick google, so that pointed to this being part of some larger database, but none of the pages nor links seemed to go to a broader home page. Finally I tried the sponsors at the bottom of the page, and it does turn out there’s something called Scratchpads (not myspecies???) that’s the source of all these. Baby Whale Mormyrids are just the most adorable things ever. I am so happy to have the privileged of owning one. He gets along well with every fish and has no problem getting food.
Also the 3 smaller clown loaches are now official best buds with the elephant nose fish. Fish Life is goood!
Feeding the Peters Elephant Nose school is always fun to watch. I also feed the big fire eel in this video. Enjoy!
