Jean Bridget (L) and Ethel Burke (R) examine some of the millions of feet of film at the National Archives before cataloguing it. 10/8/1944. NARA ID 208-FS-3221.
As you well know, the National Archives holds the permanently valuable records of the federal government. In addition to 14 billion documents, including the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights, the agency also holds an estimated half a million reels of motion picture film–the world’s largest public domain film collection. The Motion Picture Preservation Lab physically handles about 2 million feet of film per year – if laid out end-to-end, it would be greater than the distance between College Park, MD, and Boston, MA. They include the Apollo 11 raw footage, the Iwo Jima Flag Raising, The March on Washington, and the first color film of Yellowstone National Park!

Game Changer? MoPix Releases First Feature Film The Tunnel as an iPad app #infdist

**[Self-Distributing Your Film? Sell It as a Fully-Featured Android or Apple iOS App with MoPix](http://nofilmschool.com/2012/08/sell-film-android-apple-ios-app-mopix/) (NoFilmSchool)** >...a new company called MoPix is creating a way for anyone to sell their films by turning them into fully-featured Android or iOS apps. >...which could cost filmmakers anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 depending on how complicated the app is. That's actually not that bad of a deal, considering that's how much it would cost you to have 1000-5000 DVDs replicated. Given the advent of mobile computing, releasing a film as an app could very well become the distribution method of the future. Right now caps on app size limit the full potential of app-based distribution, but the benefits could very well outweigh the costs. But I'm not sold completely, I'd much rather have something like iBooks Author, where I could go and 'create' a DVD-like app, but I doubt that will be coming anytime soon. Here's a [YouTube walkthrough](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtPHh_pBCZo) of one of MoPix's apps. And you can read more about MoPix on their [website](http://www.getmopix.com).
