It had started as a group effort, since all of them were pretty much experts, but Andy was leading the event. At least, she had been, until it became obvious she was unusually nervous, and forgetting some key safety lessons. Nile had pulled her apart while the others went on with the lesson.

Nile reached out in time to grab Andyâs arm and pulled back to her side. She narrowed her eyes at the older woman, âWait⌠Are you⌠worried?â she asked, âAbout Quynh? Your wife who happens to be immortal and apparently stronger than the whole damn ocean?â
Andy rolled her eyes and looked deeply impatient. She looked back once at Quynh having the time of her life skipping over the safety regulations, and answered in a whisper, âListen, she⌠sheâs died more time than all of us combined,â she voice shook with pain and guilt, but her nerves were somehow amusing, even endearing, âShe could⌠sheâll probably be the next to lose her immortality. Iâm trying to avoid finding out too soon, okay?â
Nile tried everything she could to hold back her smile but it was a lost battle, âAww, youâre worried about her!â
âNile!â Andy groaned, covered her face with her hands and took a moment to gather herself, âYou donât get it,â she insisted, âHer lifeâs at risk and she doesnât even notice. Sheâs lost all sense of self-preservation. Sheâs acting as dumb as if she just found out sheâs immortal.â
âHey, I didnâtâŚâ the younger woman tried to defend herself but a stern look from Andy got her to surrender, âOkay, fine, I shot myself, jumped off a building, tried poison a couple of times, sue me. I had to see what happened!â
âYou literally didnât have to, but youâre missing the point,â Andy continued, âI taught her how to drive, and now I canât even let her get in a car by herself because I just know she wants to make one of them explode.â
âCan I go with her?â
âShut up,â Andy interrupted her, âSheâs electrocuted herself about five times now, and I no longer believe her when she tells me she doesnât understand how it works. Sheâs too smart for that.â
âOh yeah,â Nile agreed, looking at something behind Andy, âShe is a genius, sheâs holding three guns now.â
âWhat?!â
âAndy, relax! Iâm kidding, sheâs still holding just two guns,â Nile gently placed her hands on the other womanâs shoulders and turned her back around to face her, âShe still looks pretty immortal to me. Youâre not though, and youâre about to give yourself a heart attack.â
Andy looked down and took a deep breath. When she looked up she smiled at Nile, âWhat do you know, you cut off one of your fingers the other day.â
The young woman laughed at that, but decided against trying to explain the unexplainable. âListen, itâs sweet that youâre freaking out. I get it, you obviously donât want to lose her again. But sheâs alive and safe, Andy, you can relax now.â There was a moment of peace, and Andy smiled gratefully at her, it was a beautiful and particular smile that she had reserved just for her family. Nile hated to interrupt the moment of silent gratitude, but she had to say, âOkay, you may worry now, she did pick up a third gun.â

Joe loves Booker, very much so.
Because he highly doubts that if he didnât, he wouldâve have spent the days and weeks and months after London feeling like he canât breathe, plagued with nightmares and âwhat ifsâ and things left unsaid. And every time he finds himself wanting, wishing that he can speak to his brother and ask why, why did he do this, he is hit, constantly and consistently, with the realization that he knows exactly why he had done it.
And it breaks Joeâs heart, again and again.
And while he understands it, while Joe knows that this is something that he can one day forgive, or have already forgiven Booker for, right now heâs just stuck on the fact that it was a very specific series of choices that made Booker do what he did.
Joe puts a hand to his mouth and clenches his eyes shut. It never fails to make his stomach turn.
