And they don't stop coming and they don't stop coming and they don't stop coming and they don't stop coming.
Man, where to begin? Flight, friend meetup, summer camp x4, manifest x3, flight, brief rest, father's day x2, vet x2. We're gonna skim it.
Making
It's actually pretty easy to get in a flow state when you're working alongside people you actually like doing things you all actually care about. Summer camp was 12ish hours per day of semi-unstructured time that I mainly used to teach a coworker the basics of code style and apply some redis-shaped bandaids to Manifold infrastructure.
Then we had Manifest which was similarly cool and fun as last year. I learned about the Christian Machine Intelligence and Gay Furries and Baby Dyson Spheres. I also lost terribly at the Nash Pit to a thirteen year old and I wasn't even playing. I was briefly a carnie. Taylor Swift happened. I like to think of Manifest as a calibration tool for my brain. I am like a hobbit in many ways and often think of only the next few days, which I want to be very similar to the last few days. But at Manifest people are asking much larger questions, about lightcones and flavors of utopia. I think they usually have the wrong answers, but I like to be around people asking those types of questions to encourage me to do the same.
Then we came home and I avoided working on any of that. I workshopped some changes to my nice numbers to do a depth-first search from the least significant digits, which I was already kinda doing but this rewrite put it front and center. It didn't really pan out after benchmarking, I was hoping for a 5x speedup increasing with base but it was actually around 2x and only on a couple bases, not increasing. Sad! Also had some changes for themis, mostly housekeeping, haven't had much time to review yet.
Need to get back to Manifold this week. Lots to do, not enough time.
Reading
Nearly done with Crystal Mentality. Last time I was in the middle of the Mars tribunal, so I was really worried that it would be slow and boring. But now we have/are a railgun, so I'm happy.
Watching
Finally finished The Boys, which ended the way it was always going to. I feel like there should be a truism about the primary conflict of a show being between the first two characters on the imdb page, doubly so if they're supposedly allies. Despite being such a reddit show (and ten years late for that to be funny) it was always enjoyable to watch at the very least.
Started the Witch Hat Atelier anime which is shaping up to be quite good. I love it when rules, especially rules of magic, are presented as Facts even though they're a lie or intentional oversimplification. c.f the door monster video on hype: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMYFWqGl7JM&t=523s
We also started Star City (with the FAM group). The pilot didn't catch me, but episode two had enough interesting stuff I might finish the season. I swear the title sequence is what kept me watching FAM for so long, so without that they'll need the show to actually be good.
Playing
Before we left for the SF trip I didn't want to start anything big, so I played a few smaller games:
A Short Hike was cute, the camera controls being the worst part but still very playable. There's enough ways to complete the game and enough fun side things to run into that you never have to worry about doing things the right way.
Journey was also pretty cute, an interesting world and some great landscape visuals and not a word in the whole thing. Didn't really stick with me aside from the vibe though.
ENA: Dream BBQ was wild and amazing, I was not at all prepared for what it was and I'm so glad for that. There was also a surprising amount of care put into it, I've seen games very similar to this fail in a dozen different ways that this one deftly avoided. Very dreamlike, very fun.
I also started replicant.space, a programmer's game that requires writing your own game client. I think it's a fantastic idea, it's based on the Bobiverse books (which I loved) and I think there's some really solid bones there. Unfortunately I slipped off after some pretty big blockers around the resource transport system and then the blueprint acquisition system. Hopefully they adjust enough stuff for season 2 I can hop back in for that.
And then after I got home I restarted Cyberpunk 2077 in order to finally play the Phantom Liberty DLC. I forgot how much I loved the conversation system in the game and the phone system specifically.
turns out, if you put whole milk yogurt in with the milk when steaming it, the texture ends up being PHENOMENAL. Cloudy, fluffy, and the foam holds for a while :D it's like more milk per milk?
