Early Morning at Gatwick Airport back in September with a Monarch Airlines Airbus A321, Cathay Pacific Airbus A350-900, EasyJet Airbus A320s, Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747-400 and Thomas Cook and Air Transat Airbus A330-200s.

The airline had struggled financially for several years however the acquisition of the company by Greybull Capital in 2014 caused more uncertainty as it pledged to provide new capital to the airline which it ultimately failed to deliver. Monarch Airlines (ZB/MON) | Years Active: 1967 - 2017 | Fleet Size At Time Of Closure: 35 | Operating Bases: Birmingham (BHX), Leeds Bradford (LBA), London Gatwick (LGW), London Luton (LTN), Manchester (MAN) | Reason For Closure: Administration⁣ ⁣ Founded in 1967, Monarch was created to carry British holidaymakers to desirable destinations throughout Europe at a time when air travel was considered as only accessible to the rich and famous.⁣ ⁣ In 1971, the airline welcomed its first jet aircraft, a Boeing 720B whilst in 1980 Monarch took delivery of its first brand new jet aircraft, a Boeing 737-200 Advanced. Just one year later Monarch became the first charter airline to order the Boeing 757 and opened its first scheduled services in 1985 when it was awarded licenses to operate between the UK and Malaga, Menorca and Tenerife.⁣ ⁣ Possibly the aircraft that is remembered most fondly amongst the Monarch fleet, the AIrbus A300-600R arrived in 1990, marking the arrival of Monarch’s first widebody aircraft and allowing the airline to expand further.⁣ ⁣ After 1995, Monarch came under increasing pressure from newly formed budget airlines and within 10 years It had stopped all charter flying. By 2004 the airline had adopted a low-cost model itself in competition to airlines such as EasyJet and Ryanair but continued to operate profitably up to the end of the decade where increased financial pressures and competition started taking its toll on the airline.⁣ ⁣ At 3:19AM on 2 October 2017 the last ever Monarch flight (ZB3785) touched down at Manchester Airport with the sad news of the collapse of the airline coming 40 minutes later.
