L Is For… Lufthansa Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LH/DLH) | Callsign: Lufthansa | Fleet Size: 300 | Destinations: 220 | Bases: Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC) When combined with its subsidiaries, Lufthansa is the second largest airline in Europe based on passenger numbers and can trace its history back to 1926 when Deutsche Luft Hansa was formed in Berlin. DLH as it was known remained Germany’s flag carrier until 1945 when all services were terminated following the defeat of Nazi Germany. A new national airline was founded in 1953 which later acquired the name and logo of Lufthansa in 1954, whilst the airline’s first jetliners (Boeing 707s) were ordered in 1958. Widebody aircraft (Boeing 747s) were added in the 1970s with DC-10s (1973) and Airbus A300s (1976) following later in the decade.
