Just do the next right thing…
I have already briefly shared my opinion about the film on Twitter. In short: I liked it, although I see all the flaws that were there.
I would really love the creators of MK to work out their world as it was done in the Hobbit movie (as an example). The scale of the MK universe does not fit into an hour and forty minutes of the film's running time. I want more. Better. Do it! And people will continue to love you
P.S. Kano and Baraka are pure fun
also crazy to me how liu kang and kung lao don’t speak chinese anymore when they’re speaking to each other. ik there was a whole thing about how the subtitles for their dialogue was mistranslated in the last movie but i really miss that :(

Mortal Embers Pt. 2
Liu Kang x F! Reader
Masterlist
Slight Angst/ Maybe some comfort
Plotline:
After losing Liu in the battle against Shao Kahn, you're lost and hopeless. Luckily your fellow champions are right there for you.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The air inside Raiden’s temple was heavy, thick with the scent of burning incense that did nothing to mask the underlying metallic tang of dried blood. The war was over. Earthrealm was safe. But the silence that filled the stone corridors felt less like peace and more like a tomb.
You sat on the edge of the stone steps overlooking the training courtyard, your knees pulled tightly against your chest. Your hands were still stained with the dark sand of the Outworld arena. You hadn't washed them. You couldn't bring yourself to. It felt like the last tangible piece of the realm where Liu Kang had faded into embers, the final physical connection to a man you had loved in agonizing secrecy.
The thoughts kept circling, clawing at your throat. I love you. I never told you. The words felt like a physical weight, suffocating and entirely useless now.
"Hey."
A shadow fell over you. Johnny Cage stood a few paces back, his usual swagger entirely absent. He had taken off his signature sunglasses, revealing bloodshot, exhausted eyes. For once, he didn't have a witty one-liner or a sarcastic remark. He just looked at you, his shoulders slumped under the weight of a reality no Hollywood script could ever prepare him for.
"Sonya's getting patched up by the Monks," Johnny said softly, shifting his weight. He took a step closer, hesitant, before slowly sitting down on the step a couple of feet away from you. He didn't try to wrap an arm around you, sensing the fragile, shattered barrier you were holding up. "She's pretty banged up from those sonic punches, but she's breathing. Kitana's with her."
You didn't look at him. You just stared at the empty courtyard where Liu used to run his fire drills at dawn. "He knew, Johnny." Your voice was a hollow rasp, barely louder than the wind rustling through the temple tapestries. "Right before he... before the fire took him. He looked at me, and he said he knew. And I spent months being a coward."
Johnny swallowed hard, looking down at his own bruised knuckles. "You weren't a coward, kid. We were fighting for our lives. He knew how you felt because... well, anyone with eyes could see the way he looked at you. Fire God or not, he was completely gone for you."
A bitter, choking sob caught in your throat. You pressed your forehead against your knees, your shoulders shaking as the tears finally spilled over, hot and unforgiving. Having his feelings confirmed didn't bring comfort; it only sharpened the agony of the loss. He had loved you, and you had both run out of time.
From the shadows of the corridor behind you, heavy, uncoordinated footsteps echoed. Kano stumbled out into the dim light of the courtyard, a makeshift bandage wrapped crudely around his torso. He held a half-empty bottle of fire liquor he’d pilfered from the temple kitchens, his cybernetic eye whirring a dull, agitated red.
"Oh, look at this. The bloody welcoming committee," Kano growled, taking a swig from the bottle. He leaned heavily against a stone pillar, wincing as he moved. He looked at your trembling frame and let out a harsh, cynical breath. "Look, mate, the monk chose to turn himself into a bloody firecracker to go save his cousin. Right proper hero stuff. But he’s gone. Sitting here weeping in the dirt ain't going to bring the pretty boy back, is it?"
"Shut up, Kano," Johnny snapped, his voice dropping into a dangerous, warning register as he stood up, stepping between you and the mercenary. "Just for once in your miserable life, shut your mouth."
"I'm just being practical, Cage!" Kano spat, pointing the bottle at the empty courtyard. "The chosen bloody champion blew himself up! We won the tournament, we're alive, and I want a bloody drink without having to walk past a mourning graveyard every five seconds!"
"Enough."
The word resonated through the very stones of the temple, carrying the low, vibration of thunder.
Lord Raiden stepped out from the main sanctuary. The Thunder God’s usual radiant aura was muted, his staff clicking quietly against the floor. His immortal face was etched with a profound, heavy sorrow. He looked at Kano, a single spark of blue lightning dancing across his eyes that made the mercenary instantly mutter a curse and step back into the shadows.
Raiden approached you slowly, his gaze gentle but incredibly sorrowful. He stopped at the top of the steps, looking down at your broken form.
"Kano's words are crass, but the reality remains," Raiden said softly, his voice echoing in the quiet night. "Liu Kang’s departure has left a void in Earthrealm that can never be filled. He was my greatest student. My son in all but blood."
You finally lifted your head, looking up at the God of Thunder through a blur of tears. "He said you told him he wasn't the chosen one, Raiden. He said his journey was to bring back Kung Lao. Did you know? Did you know he was going to leave us?"
Raiden closed his eyes, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. When he opened them, the lightning was gone, leaving only the ancient, tired eyes of a protector who had watched too many champions fall. "A protector sees many paths, y/n. I knew Liu Kang’s soul was bound to his brother's. I knew his destiny was tied to a higher purpose, one that transcended this mortal tournament. But knowing the path does not lessen the grief of walking it."
Raiden stepped closer, placing a hand gently on your head. A faint, soothing warmth radiated from his palm, easing the physical ache in your chest, though it did nothing for the hollow void in your heart.
"He did not die in vain," Raiden whispered. "He transcended to pull Kung Lao from the darkness. He saved us all. And he loved this world enough to ensure it's people had a world left to live in."
Sonya Blade emerged from the corridor, her ribs tightly bound in linen, leaning heavily on Kitana for support. Sonya’s face was pale, but her eyes softened as she looked at you. She didn't say anything; she just walked over and sat down on your other side, pulling your shaking frame into a tight, fierce embrace. Kitana stood silently beside them, her steel fans folded away, her head bowed in respect for the champion who had bought her victory with his soul.
You let yourself sink into Sonya’s hold, looking up at the dark, starry sky above the temple. Somewhere out there, across the realms, Liu Kang was fighting his way through the dark to find his brother. He was a god now, a being of pure fire and spirit.
But damn you if you didn't get him back...
Just... THEM
MK2 MOVIE WAS GENUINELY SO MUCH FUCKING BETTER THAN THE FIRST AND THAT'S SAYING A LOT
